Rooms Fashion Exhibition, Tokyo, Japan

MEEWEE DINKEE is produced by Japanese art unit MAYWA DENKI and designed by producer, movie director and fashion designer TORICO and artist Aruta Soup. All people with lots of experience. “The concept is ‘fashion from art,’” explains TORICO. MAYWA DENKI is not so well-known among younger people these days, so the art unit felt fashion was a good way to connect with them. The company was launched last year, but the SS 2014 collection is the first one.

Its unisex and women’s designs are inspired by MAYWAY DENKI itself as well as toys, with Aruta doing the illustrations and TORICO the designs. Designs range from simple T-shirts with prints to dresses with elaborate illustrations. “We mostly use polyester,” says TORICO, “to make it possible to print with inkjet printers. That way the illustrations look really beautiful.”

Kjeld Duits About the Author

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.
