NIGATSU is the brainchild of Naoyuki Tajima, a graduate of Mode Gakuen, started in 2012. Tajima makes all his clothes by hand in a small atelier in Handa, a town in the countryside of Aichi Prefecture. “I’m far away from Tokyo in the middle of nowhere and am unaware of all the trends, so I just go my own way,” explains Tajima. It shows in his designs, which are singularly unique.
His unisex creations are made with wool and cotton and express an endless playfulness and authencity. He is not bound by any great concepts, Tajima says. “I’m not inspired by for example seeing a beautiful building by Antoni Gaudí, but get my ideas from daily life,” he says, “like the depressed feeling you get when it rains, or the excitement before a meal.”
