Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

@Maria: Wow, that jacket a present!? I would marry ASAP with the one who give me something like that! — I think the present was from a female friend (who didn’t need the jacket anymore). Marriage with people of the same gender, unfortunately, is not yet legal in Japan. ^_-

This location is actually quite significant to JS. I often stand across from the Lawson you can see in the background to hunt for people to shoot. We then go and find a suitable place for the shoot.

@KD: I did not know it is not yet legal… I wonder why… from what I’ve seen, there are many persons with different sexual orientation in there…

She’s looking great! I haven’t seen her online in awhile…I always love the Vivienne Westwood rocking horse shoes.

@Maria: Actually, there is a lot of discrimination against the LGBT community in Japan, and the majority of the members stay in the closet. There are a few people on TV, but they are reduced to acting according to role models. To prevent misunderstandings, Matsuri is straight.

@KD: Really? Because of those people I have seen on TV shows I thought that it was accepted…

I can’t tell the dates when I saw her on RID, but it was various times after the last shots you took of her.

@Kjeld-That’s very interesting..I was kind of thinking the same thing, but wasn’t sure. I felt like for several months before that night, she was popping up on street snaps almost daily. At least it seemed like it… Then she kind of disappeared! Maybe she has some cool creative projects going. :) I remember when I met her on the street on Vogue’s “Fashion Night Out”, she had recognized me from my art and I had recognized her from street snaps, and in particular, a photo shoot she did with the brand “HIRO.” So maybe she is doing more stuff like that. It was a cool moment for me! Anytime I have people that I am personally inspired by also enjoy my illustration work is like a dream come true for me.
But back to the topic…Her style is killer.

Love this look totally would wear everything, she rocks the hair and the contrast of dark glasses is wicked, love the jacket, feeling inspired now cheers :)
