Japan will start a Fashion Week to better compete with well-established fashion cities like New York, Paris and Milan.
The first Japan Fashion Week (JFW), billed as “a Paris collection with a Tokyo style” is to be held this October in Tokyo.
Tomorrow, distributors from department stores and the apparel industry, material makers, fashion industry representatives and officials from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will hold a meeting to discuss plans.
Since the 1980s, Japan has brought forth many highly successful designers whose work sells internationally, but the majority of them move overseas.
The new show must encourage the world fashion industry to come to Japan, instead of Japan fanning out to the world.
Fashion has been designated as an intellectual asset-based industry. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry wants to develop strategies that will develop it to a point where struggling textile manufacturers will be able to thrive once again.
About the AuthorInspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Hi there, I am a designer with a label called Psylo. We produce very hip urban streetwear fashion for both guys and girls and we live and create in Bali. We are looking to increase our market to Japan and would love some contacts for a good distributor there. I am an independent bag designer based in the UK.
I currently have part of my collection in three Tokyo shops, placed by an agent in Japan.
Due to the nature of my product, quantites are limited which has been a stumbling block for the agent concerning their profits.
I would idealy like to be able to approach smaller boutiques in Japan myself, directly ( as I do here in the UK and which prooves to be successful).
Searching Tokyo boutiques on the internet for website addresses and contact details is vertually impossible.
If you have a spare moment, please pay my website a visit to get a feel of my product.
Perhaps you could then point me in the direction of some relevent contacts?
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
Kindest regards,
Sarah.
