Photos of Osaka Trends

Tokyo’s Harajuku and Shibuya are now famous worldwide, but there are still many people who don’t know that Japan has another city with cool youth culture districts. Some two and a half hours by the super speedy Bullet Train gets you in Osaka.

Osaka’s youth culture is mostly centered in Amerika Mura (American Village), famous for its huge Statue of Liberty on top of a building, and Horie, right across the street from Amerika Mura. Whereas Amerika Mura mainly attracts people between 16 and 22, Horie tends to attract a slightly older crowd of between 18 and 26.

The shops in Horie are a little bit more sophisticated. It can be compared to Tokyo’s Daikanyama. Last Saturday we went shooting in Horie for the first time since August. Summer is even hotter in Osaka than Tokyo and few people take the trouble to dive deep into their closets. We saw mostly (very cool) t-shirts.

But Autumn is clearly different. The weather was great and people went out shopping en masse. We found an enormous variety of styles (which is what Osaka is known for) and you can find a nice selection of them in this month’s photos. Check them out and comment on what you like and dislike!
