We had planned to visit the aquarium at Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, but there was a huge line of people waiting to get in, so we scrapped that plan quickly. We decided to shoot outside. Not such a smart idea it seemed at first. We were almost blown away by the wind. Just look at that hair! But in the end we found a relatively wind-free spot.
This is where I ended up shooting the street photos that I posted last month.
Incidentally, this style is called Hadeko (ハデコ), derived from hade (loud, flashy, gaudy) and Decora, a style popular in the 90s.
At first, it seems that some very colorful clothes have been put together randomly. But when you look very carefully you will notice that each person has selected a few basic colors that are repeated in most items. Considering the kind of bright colors that are used this is incredibly difficult to do.
First you actually have to find clothes with almost the same color scheme, and then you have to match them up, so that the colors come together as they do in the outfits in this page. It’s quite a challenge, and I admire anybody who can carry it off.
