Unlimited: Comme des Garçons, a book adapted from a documentary about the dressmaking of internationally renowned Japanese designer brand Comme des Garçons, which was broadcast on NHK three years ago and received a great deal of viewer response, was recently published by Heibonsha Limited Publishers (price: 5,775 yen).
Back in the 1980s, Rei Kawakubo, the founder and designer of the brand, stunned the fashion world and overturned people’s notions of beauty in clothing through her unusual style of ragged hems and torn dresses. Since the brand’s foundation more than 30 years ago, Kawakubo, now one of the most respected designers in the world, has been pursuing avant-garde cloth making.
The new book redefines “what Comme des Garçons is” through interviews with Kawakubo herself and about 50 key people from the global fashion industry.
Until the original documentary was made, Comme des Garçons had barely appeared in the media. Kawakubo’s passion and ideas for design are woven into the book as well as designs for the brand’s dressmaking.
The book is written in both Japanese and English (in full color) and includes about 200 beautiful photos and illustrations.
