Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Really great photos… nice combo; casual yet still very svelte.

It is quite different from the styles we usually shoot, but I thought it was an interesting look.

@Kjeld, it is definitely different from what you guys usually shoot, but I think it is still like what you guys do shoot in a sense because it is very unique, even for Japan. Very interesting, I LOVE the night shots, keep em’ coming! If you don’t mind me asking..Are you living in Osaka currently? Or did you take a collection of photos? Either way is cool, because I was just really glad to finally find a site that has a good collection of street style shots from Osaka, not just Tokyo!

@Lactose Intoler-Art: Good to see you again. It’s difficult to get good white balance on the street at night, and therefore accurate colors, which is important for clothing. And I prefer to be at home at night, as well! But I will try to get more night shots.

I live right in between Kobe and Osaka, actually. I try to visit Tokyo regularly, but also depend heavily on Emi and Marie for the Tokyo shoots.

Oh ok, cool, that makes sense! I just love what you guys do on this site, you know I’m a huge fan. Haha. And I love the way your camera takes night shots, and totally agree that the colors are so important!

@Lactose Intoler-Art: Thanks. The feeling is mutual; I love your art work.

You may know that I use a Nikon D3s. This camera is very light sensitive, allowing me to shoot in situations with little ambient light without having to resort to flash. So shadows are not washed out, and the subject fits into the rest of the scene naturally. That’s what makes these night shoots look different.

Waaaah, she’s so pretty! Honestly, she doesn’t look put Japanese though…she kind of looks like she’s half Hispanic. I wonder if she is…?

@Etsune: I don’t think so. But then again, you never know. It is not uncommon for Japanese people to discover that they have a foreigner among their ancestors of which they were totally unaware.

@Kjeld Duits
that’s true…and also, facially, Hispanics and Asians have a lot in common. like if you look at their eyebrows, they’re almost the same, only Hispanics have darker brows (you’ll notice the eyebrow thing more among the males cuz the females tend to have their eyebrows done…).
But for her, the thing that got me was those cheeks of hers. They just REALLY remind me of one of my Hispanic friends’.

@Etsune: No kidding? I have always seen this kind of cheek bone structure as something typical Asian. I guess it is not…

@Kjeld Duits: Really? Haha that’s news to me. But I guess you’d know because you’re actually over there in Japan. Most of the Asians I see here in America DO have really defined cheekbones, but I don’t see many people around with cheekbones as defined as her. I know a Vietnamese girl who’s got those gorgeous cheekbones. I liked her brother for a while and someday hoped our children would have the cheekbones his sister has…
Ok, WOAH. Too much info. And quite the rabbit trail. Anyways, the point is, I guess I don’t see those cheeks as often because most of the people in my area are Korean.

@Etsune: Although many Japanese like to present themselves as homogeneous, and many foreigners like to believe them, this is of course a myth. There is a lot of variety in the Japanese gene pool and therefore looks. At the very least you have racial minorities like Ainu and Okinawans. But the ancestors of modern Japanese have come from all over Asia (as well as a few from Europe), so that naturally expresses itself in the body and face structure.

@Kjeld Duits: Wow, really? Honestly, I prefer a bit of variety. I think it’s cool when someone has mixed blood in them. It makes them more….unique, haha! I think that those with other things in them should embrace it! I’m pure Kenyan cuz both of my parents were born in Kenya and i was born here…but still! I appreciate mixed blood! I want to have multiracial children. Blackanese all the way, haha!

@Kjeld Duits: Finally, someone gets it! I have a few other black friends who are interested in Asian culture (Ok, two. The other one I can think of doesn’t count because she’s half black, half asian anyway.), but a good portion of my (few, let me say) black friends think I’m CRAZY for liking asian boys. But honestly, when I look at someone, I don’t think that this person is white and this person is korean and this person is black. We’re all just people to me….

@Etsune: We are not the only people who think that race is only skin deep.

Kjeld Duits (photographer)

@Kjeld Duits: Yeah…I mean, I really don’t see how someone can just look at someone and constantly be thinking about what he/she is. It just doesn’t click with me haha. I honestly think that dating someone from another race is no different from dating someone with blue eyes or someone shorter or taller than you. It’s just a physical characterostic.
