Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Wow, that muffler really looks…dead ._. But I like her outfit and love her hairstyle! ^^

Hi, long-time lurker here, posting for the first time. I just wanted to say that I’m a huge fan of this site and I am in love with all the richly layered, complex outfits, but I have read in some posts that this isn’t considered “mainstream” fashion. I’m not really sure what that kind of fashion looks like (I’m new to Japanese fashion/culture) so can anyone recommend a good mainstream Japanese street fashion blog for me to check out? Thanks in advance :)

@Amber: Thank you for your support. It is always nice to hear from our fans! Yes, at JAPANESE STREETS we do indeed search for and photograph the exceptional and original. I admire people who are able to step outside conventions. I’m not familiar with the kind of blog you’re looking for, but Tokyo Telephone has a great article about Japanese mainstream fashion.

I just read that article from Tokyo Telephone. I honestly had no idea that the mainstream fashion was so conservative! I kind of thought that this really creative stuff for which Japan is known, as stated in the article, was a norm! Thanks for the interesting read!

@Whitney: We, and other blogs, cover the trend leaders. I think that most of the things about Japan that reach the media are the exceptions, not the rule. That makes these looks even more awesome. ^_-
