Listening to Toe: Goodbye

See all the people we photographed at the Bunka Fashion College Bunkasai 2012 (Culture Festival)

Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

This is such a cool outfit. I love the colors and textures together and that hair clip is SO neat! Just curious, I’ve noticed there are a lot of signs and advertisements I’ve seen in these pictures that aren’t in Japanese characters. Do a lot of the Japanese understand the characters that a lot of other languages use? Like the “bunka” in the background?

@Whitney: I shot Misu at this year’s Bunkasai (Culture Festival) at Bunka Fashion College, therefore the word Bunka at the stage in the back. Japanese learn the alphabet at elementary school and have no trouble reading it. Many don’t really process words written in the alphabet though, just like you and I don’t notice every single tree. You know there’s a tree, but unless it really stands out you don’t notice its specific shape. ^_-

Ahh, I see. That’s very interesting. I wish we were taught things like that in elementary in the states :/ I wanna go to Japaaaaan!

@Maria: Now you mention it… I hadn’t really noticed; don’t see many, if any, Mori Girls, anymore these days.
