Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Hardcore. Love the patches and the leather jacket.

I love his hair!! And he has such a sweet face, despite the ‘bad guy’ style. :)

YES! I seriously can’t get enough of the punk style. Effortless and grungy but so well put together. And I need to get myself a pair those boots!

I absolutely love this guy! And the necklace is fabulous. He kinda reminds me of Ama from “Hebi ni Piasu”, except the lack of facial piercings ^^

Thanks for the great comments. I don’t usually shoot this style, because I feel it’s not specific to Japan. But I’ll keep my eyes open.

what is written on Kakegawa’s t-shirt? I like this style. I’ve spoted, that in Japan chaneged their favourite European orientation: from German in ’80 to English now, am I right?

@Annika: An interesting observation that I haven’t heard made before. What makes you think that Japanese were oriented towards Germany in the 1980s and have changed that to the UK now?

Wa! Reminds me a lot of Li Lium, even has the same round pouch! This is like the Japanese biker tribe :D

@Maria: Li Lium and Kakegawa are actually friends!

He reminds me a lot of ama in the film hebi ni piasu. I don’t know if anybody has seen it though…

Biker? He might be a biker but damn he’s quite the punker. The stuff that says punk aren’t punk, and this is punk. This kid damn knows what he is doing. Those crusty pants are wonderful. the Crass patch i cant get enough of.

@Vex: Haha, the fashion categories always give us headaches. Should we go with the Japanese or the Western interpretation? As we introduce Japanese fashion to the world, we have decided to follow how Japanese label the looks. We especially pay attention to what the people themselves belief their style is. Glad you like Kakegawa’s look!
