Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Comment (日本語もOK)

This still has Juria’s typical sex appeal, this time using the skirt-stocking-thigh ratios to her advantage. However, this outfit has much more of a classy style to it, too. I /love/ that corset skirt. It really does work with the camisole perfectly.

So chic! The last shot is super cool 8)
I like how her hair colour is changing with time. Her chocker is so cute and her tattoo too ^^

I really like Jurias lingerie looks. This one is very elegant and more adult like the last ones. I like that she wears her hair open and her eye make up. Sooo seductive.

ALl: Thank you. I actually shot this before I did this shoot, but she was too busy to give the brands at the time… Love this look; it looks really good on Juria.

Very stylish but she looks rather malnourished.

I rather love the hair and heavy make up on her, she really plays up to her style. The necklace/choker is a hidden gem. I agree Virgie that she appears a bit malnourished, but after a while on this site I’m used to seeing painfully thin Japanese girls, as most of them are so thin!

@Virgie & Mel: I always felt too thin in Europe, and especially in the States, so it was a relief to arrive in Japan. I was 65 kg at 1.86 m at the time, and it didn’t look out of place here. Since then I have gained a little, but when I visit Europe and the US, people have gained an awful lot more than me and I still feel thin among the many obese people I see there. I don’t know what Juria eats, but I assume her metabolism is just like that. I eat a lot myself. But if you eat healthy and avoid processed foods and especially anything with added sugar and wheat you really don’t gain weight. In spite of the recent thin-bashing in the media, thin usually doesn’t mean unhealthy.

I’m not obese, just putting it out there, and not everyone around me in my hometown is either! I never implied that she was unhealthy, when I use the term “malnourished” around my friends it just means “very skinny”, I wasn’t using the word to imply that she is dangerously unhealthy! Also, I don’t believe weight has as much to do with it as SHAPE, for women at least. I weigh quite a lot less than you Kjeld but I am also 1.58m. But I, in my opinion and in friends and families opinion, look like I weigh less than what I actually do. I have a large bust, and what we jokingly call a “ghetto booty” (SQUATS), so I suppose that’s where I get alot of my weight from. But I also have a very thin waist and slim, but toned/muscly legs (I work out, lol), and I don’t have fat on my arms or back or whatever. I’m losing my point here but I feel I need to justify my stance. I am an English girl, my measurements are 32FF bust, my waist is 24.5 inches, and my butt is 40 inches, and whilst I may not have the most common Westerner figure, I’m showing here how different Western figures can be from those of Japanese girls, who generally tend to be plain skinny. This is down to a number of factors such as genetics/lifestyle/diet and I understand that Kjeld.

@Mel: It looks like you took my comment quite personally. You even describe your body style. Please notice that I wasn’t attacking you, and my comments weren’t directed at you personally in any way. I don’t think and behave that way. As you will have noticed over the years, there is no flaming on JS. My sincerest apologies if I gave you the impression that my comments were directed at you and your physical looks.

What I was trying to do, was to add information to the discussion that was forming on this page. I felt that for people who have never been to Japan, or who are unfamiliar with the country, it would help to have context. Especially because it has become so popular among many to bash, or talk down to, thin people these days.

Virgie’s original comment, she looks rather malnourished does strongly imply Juria being unhealthy. The dictionary defines malnourished as undernourished or suffering from malnutrition. The word is usually used in sentences like malnourished victims of the famine or urgent treatment needed for malnourished children. My comment was meant to protect Juria, and to fight an insidious and harmful stereotype that is going stronger all the time.

On a personal note, after many many years of suffering from a mysterious and debilitating disease, I was diagnosed with severe food allergies in 2009. My body has an intolerance for gluten (grains), lactose (diary products) and refined sugars. This forced me to strictly read the labels on food, something I am shamed to admit, I barely did before. I was deeply shocked by what I found. Most processed food is filled with large amounts of sugar, fillers made of grains and harmful chemicals. Even ham and sausages contain sugar. Just cutting out processed foods and going back to old-fashioned cooking from scratch, as well as entirely removing sugar and grains from my diet, made me loose close to 20 kg and returned my health to me. Even though I eat more now that I did previously. The experience makes me want to warn others against processed food, as I occasionally do, and did in my comment above. ^^

I completely agree with @kjelds. Juria looks great :) I always love her outfits. Such a great sense of fashion! I love her shoes! I’ve always envied people who can wear these so easily.

@KD: You are making me feel bad, because I love sweets and lactose products :(
And keeping up with the discussion, I think she is not malnourish, you can easily see a healthy body in these and these shots of her ^^

@Maria: Don’t feel bad, Maria. Enjoy the dairy products (I miss them) and watch out for the sweets! If I want to eat something sweet, I now eat fruit, especially lots of dates. ^_- And I make my own chocolate, sweetened with dried fruit. Yummy! ^^

@Kjeld Duits: It's a funny coincidence, that you write about food labels and about the ingredients of processed food. My Bachelor thesis, which I submitted two weeks ago, is about the food labeling discussion in Germany.
I read the book food politcs from Marion Nestle, which is a very interesting book about the food industry in the USA. It includes the discussed themes.
It's always good to eat fresh self cooked meals and reduce sugar. That will help you to stay healthy (with daily amounts of motion). I think weight issues and talking about beauty is a modern paradigm which misleads us from our needs. Juria looks good and healthy, which doesn't mean that somebody who isn't thin is unhealthy. Just different bodytypes.

@Nora: Thanks for mentioning Marion Nestle’s food politcs. I added a link to her site in your comment. Appropriate last name she has, by the way! Nestlé is after all one of the larger food processing companies in the world. There are lots of problems with processed foods and labeling. We should really teach about this at our schools, food being such an important basic necessity of life.

I think I’m going to be a big fan of this girl. One of the best-dressed 17yr olds I’ve seen.
