Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Wow she really changed her style! I like it! ^^ Especially the skirt with the devilish cat.

@Larissa: Yes, a drastic change. Marina told me that with everybody looking so kawaii, she wanted to go the other way.

@Kjeld:
YES! FINALLY!
haha, I was so excited, you really didn’t promise too much!
Well, i guess she’s reached her goal, she doesn’t look cute in this fluffy way like many do, but it’s great how she still looks feminine, with that delicate lace top.
It’s great to see that a woman doesn’t have to dress and look all kawaii to still be a woman.
(although I like the kawaii look too^^)
And somehow it feels like she’s getting more and more used to being shot by you and the pictures feel kind of more like Marina-san really is or could be (because i don’t know her I don’t think I can really tell…). Well, at least this is what i feel from the pictures… :3
Anyhow, thanks a lot for the photos!! <3

@Nyurah: I’m glad you like this shoot. And you are right about Marina getting used to being shot by me. I think we are getting used to each other, and there is trust now. Very important for getting shots like this because as a model you need to open up to the photographer. As a model you feel very vulnerable, so trust is extremely important.

@Kjeld: Yes, and I guess it’s a thing you’re quite good at (gaining the trust of your models), because you’re shots always feel natural. And that’s one of the hardest thing often in photography I think..

She’s not afraid to experiment, I’d never be brave enough to shave half of my hair!
I like her make up, very graphic and it gives her that cat-like look. And it’s just as Nyurah said, Marina seems to be more confident in front of the camera. I especially like her attitude in the 5th picture, she knows how to pose. You did a very cool photo shoot together.

@Nyurah: Thank you. ^^
@fatcatinthehat: She’s not afraid to experiment — Yes, Marina is very courageous and has a lot of fire in her belly. You did a very cool photo shoot together. — Thank you!

I really like the idea of making a high-low skirt out of a old shirt. Cool idea. I like the lace top very much.

@nora: Yes, me too. I like the idea of not being inhibited by original intentions.

I love how the splashes of color are incorperated in this and the the ink on her skin… is it real? Anyways, its a nice touch.

@Reilyn7 the ink on her skin… is it real? — Marina writes it with a pen. The red ones under her eyes were done with traditional Japanese signature stamps called inkan, also known as hanko. They are not tattoos.

@KD: holly #$%! I thought the pussy-noize, was a tattoo, then I checked the last photos and in the others it is backwards! hahaha

Maria

@Maria: A lot of the people I shoot actually use a pen instead of real tattoos. Very smart, I’d say. Same result, but you can wash it off…

@KD: yep, same result, I’ve been completely deceived xD
