Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

AWESOME STYLE.
I love his hair, especially because he did it himself n_n
His pants and shoes are so so cool. Pants kinda remind me of Balmain or Dresscamp… or both… n_n’‘

@Maria: When he told me that he had done his hair himself, that just blew me away.

@KD: I was surprised too!
I was thinking that his hairstyle might even look good on women too :)

I like the bag. When I saw it, I thought: “If the stain is real, then that bag have gone to a lot of interesting places” xD But I know it is not real.

@Maria: That’s right, Yuta put on the paint himself. I think that is a lot more inspiring than if it had happened by accident.

“There’s something about black. You feel hidden away in it.” – said Georgia O’Keeffe, but personally I doubt that Yuta is trying to hide from anything or anyone :) When I took first look on his pictures I thought: “whoa! that guy takes no prisoners!” :)
As always i love black, the hobnails necklace, the way he mixed various fabrics and textures using just one colour, how he made up his eyes, shaved his eyebrows, and above all how he finished the look with just a small touch of white.
I was many times enchanted by creations in black colour on this blog, but this time I’m completely captured… This creation is very special for me because I feel it somehow more peculiar than many other (even the black ones), and personal also because I’m looking at his pictures and I see myself and many others in my city some time ago looking very similar way :) Taking no compromises, with provoking catchwords on our shirts, backpacks or badges… Like that one from Yuta’s shirt (The Pop Group “We Are All Pro*titutes”). All of course excluded from the community ;)
Now it’s different, during years the ways to express are changing, and I don’t see that style dressed people so often anymore. It’s getting more and more uncommon as I see. I thought that all that style folks gone somewhere but I’m glad to see them in Japan doing so well, haha ;)
All that makes Yuta’s pictures so priceless…
:)
One thing bizarre is when I look on the last picture all I’m able to think about is Jaguar Paw… Weird huh? ;)

@Monik: I love your Georgia O’Keeffe quote. I never heard that one before. It will go in my long list of quotes I like! You are absolutely right about Yuta; he is not hiding in this look. As I have noticed so often with looks like these, the image Yuta radiates is very different from his actual personality. He was soft and extremely friendly and smiled a lot when we talked. The moment the camera started whizzing though his expression changed completely. It does seem from another time; it even reminds me a bit of 70’s punk. I love how Japanese youths take aspects from past fashion trends and make them look fresh and new.

Jaguar paw?

:)

Glad you liked the quote Mr.Duits :) Here’s my favourite about black with excellent sense of humour: “People can have the Model T in any color – so long as it’s black.” – Henry Ford :)
“the image Yuta radiates is very different from his actual personality” – so he’s trying to turn his look against his personality? I wonder why is that… Quite intriguing…
“It does seem from another time; it even reminds me a bit of 70’s punk” – haha, exactly Mr.Duits :) I’m so happy that you read me between the lines ^^
“Jaguar paw?” – the main character from “Apocalypto”, for example http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii26/mysondra/Apocalypto_Jaguar_Paw_and_Flint_Sky.jpg . I know there are differences between Yuta and Jaguar style, that’s why I said it’s bizarre I associate them together but I just can’t help it.

@ Monik: Famous quote by Ford; it stills brings a smile to my face. Ah, Jaguar Paw was a character from the movie Apocalypto. I can see how Yuta reminds you of him. Yuta lives in a different kind of jungle, built of concrete and asphalt.

I WISH I were this fearless. And I agree with Maria, Balmain was the first thing that popped in my head when I saw those pants. LOVE LOVE LOVE them!

@Whitney: You know, Yuta actually did the shrink-wrap effect on the boots himself. Makes him even more awesome in my eyes.

@LittleRatbag: I think Yuta took some regular pants and changed them himself.
