Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Lately I’ve been looking for animal prints. I want my wardrobe to have something wilder xD

@Maria: At the prices that Riko paid for the furs they have to be fake. Love how Riko’s furs complete her look
@Lactose Intoler-Art: Yes, great color. Considering she started out with black it is pretty amazing.

I’m really loving the stream of awesome looks appearing on JS lately! By the way, no more phone pics?

@Theo: Thanks a lot. I moved the office (and my home) to Tokyo partly to be able to put more energy and effort into JS. You are the second person to ask me about the absence of photos of mobile phones. ^^

I kind of refrain from shooting them at the moment, because most of the people we shoot now have iPhones. I also haven’t seen any good new designs of Japanese phones since the iPhone shocked the life out of Japanese phone companies. I do shoot interesting phone cases once in a while. Hopefully, Japanese mobile phones soon get some individuality again!

Thanks, Kjeld. I always wondered how you went about taking pics of people’s phones. Did you ask them if they had an interesting phone w/charms before asking to photograph it? Or were the phones usually already visible? If they pulled it out and it looked kind of plain, did you still photograph it? Etc.

@Theo: I always asked to see their phone and shot it as a part of the whole look. Once in a while there was a phone that I had already shot several times, but that was not a big issue. Because now at least half of the people have iPhones, I find it a bit rude to ask to see their phone and then not to shoot it. As iPhone cases become more creative, I might be able to get back to shooting phones again. Although, I’d be shooting mostly cases instead of phones!

Does WASH hava a website for their boots? If not, where can I find them online?

Dec 6, 2012 (3542 days ago)

@Carey: WASH is a brand of the Washington chain of shoe stores. Washington has a web shop, but I was unable to find WASH branded shoes on it. Perhaps you can find shoes that you like nonetheless. However, I don’t know if they ship abroad. And the site is in Japanese only…
