Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

The hat is awesome! I’m really diggin hats this spring! I want to start my only little collection :D
Anyway, this outfit is just…indescribable….I don’t know WHAT to call it! But its very cute and different, that’s for sure!

@Etsune: It reminds me of Spring and a lightness of being. While I was shooting Aya, I wanted to put her on a meadow nearby a stream with people wearing straw hats in rowboats, while young lambs frolic cheerfully in the background. Her look is that light and full of cheerfulness. Great for an old-fashioned picnic with wicker baskets and real plates and glasses.

I love Japan, people walk its streets dressed in ANYTHING! I haven’t seen a place as colorful, mixed up and random in terms of style as Tokyo. Aya is a great example of how a nice attitude and confidence can make you look great even when you’ve dressed yourself very peculiarly.
P.S. Lovely hair! I adore her wavy back pony!

I love the wisps of transparent fabric peeking out.

@Lia: No problem about the mix-up; I think everybody understood what you meant. But I fixed it anyway, and also hid the second comment. Thought you might prefer that. ^^ Your comment about Aya dressing peculiarly piques my interest immediately. I actually thought she was perhaps too close to mainstream fashion compared to what we usually show on JS. But I get from your comment that you feel she is not.

@Lorena: Me too. Adds some playfulness and a whiff of mystery and a promise of yet to discover style.

@Kjeld: I can see what you mean about the meadow and the lambs…Has she been wearing a skirt instead of pants, she would really have looked like a shepherdess to me…its sort of pretty and whimsical, in my opinion :D

hello Aya, how are you?, I’m Loreto from Spain. May I ask you something personal?, Have you been in Chichester, England, in the 80’s?. I met Aya Uemura there when I was studying English and I’d like to hear from her.Thank you very much for your time.

Hi Loreta,

Both Aya and Uemura are common names in Japan.

The Aya in this photograph was born in 1982, so it is impossible that she is the Aya that you met in Chichester…
