Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

So cool. I love that most of her stuff is self-made or brandless; it creates a look that is unique only to her. I can’t stop looking at all the chains and accessories, makes me wonder how long she took getting ready in the morning :) Love the mask, too. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: North America needs to get with that trend— not just for health reasons.

Oh, where to start…
First of all, I love the color scheme. At first glance, it looks really traditional, but when you look closer, you can see the modernness mixed in…
But i think my favorite thing about her is her phone cover…it really inspires me to decorate my cover :D

@Etsune: Yes, there are some really fun phone decorations among my shots. I love the phone decoration that Matsuri does. New shots of her coming soon!

OK, this lady is my favorite shoot you’ve done for a while. I’m in great admiration of her. I dig the mask, though I don’t really understand the trend of young people in Japan wearing those. I think the first time I saw it worn as a fashion item was Ichiko in Kamikaze Girls. Where can I find more info on the mask as fashion statement?

Her style is creepy, but in a really good way! SOO interesting! And is it me or do her PUPILS look BROWN??

@Lactose Intoler-Art: Yes, I thought so, too. Creepy in a good way. I am not sure about the colors of her eyes. an’t see it well on the photos and don’t remember it from the shoot…

@Leah B.: We did an article about masks way back in 2005! Also have a look at photos of people wearing masks in our photo archive.

@Maria: I never understand why people don’t do more creative things with their flu and allergy masks (they are everywhere in Japan). So it’s great to see that someone does!
