Retrospective 2003

osaka, tokyo
RETROSPECTIVE,
Kjeld Duits

JAPANESE STREETS started on November 22, 2002. Exactly 8 years ago this month!

In advance of our birthday we take a jump back into history and look at some of the fashion trends we photographed during our first year in 2002 and 2003.

Some of these looks have stood the test of time, others would look totally out of place today.

Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

WOW i love Japanese street fashion <3 and this site! I’ve been watching the site since like 2006 and it’s amazing. I love how the style don’t really get outdated, because it’s like they’re always evolving, but keeping the old with the new! At least in my opinion ahaha Thank you so much for taking time and photographing people, one day i hope that i can do the same if i go to Japan! It also is great when i can show people in my fashion classes that there is still some real creativity in what people do, thank you so much!

Celebration time! The thing that hits my mind straight away is “where are these people now?”… By the way, it’s currently 7:33 PM in UK time. Still the 10th. ;D

Happy birthday Japanese Streets! Wow, 8 years already. I think I have been reading for around 6 or 7 but I hadn’t thought about how long it has been. I remember most of these pictures! I’m definitely curious about how all of these people are dressing now, is there anyone you’ve been photographing over the years and watching their style change and evolve?

Happy B’day, JS! This is the best site for Japanese street wear, and I wish you to continue your amazing quest to discovering the beauty of Asian fashion genius for many more years!

Wow! Once again, style has really changed. Its amazing how some of it is already returning though. I didn’t realize HOW big the hippie/bohemian influence was at that time, although I knew it was pretty big. I noticed a lot of similar headwraps on this and the 2002 pics.
The girl with the white dress and big black bag seems to be way ahead of her time! So cool..And honestly, I’m glad the whole “Takuya Angel” look is a lot less mainstream now. Glad it still exists, but definitely not my favorite Japanese Street Fashion look to be honest, but its very iconic.

These retrospectives are amazing!!! It’s fascinating to be able to look at an encapsulated version of JS and see how the trends waxed and waned!

@ALL: Thank you so much. This has all been possible thanks to your support. It has been a lot of hard work, especially when I still shot all by myself and with film, but it has been worth it!

@Lactose Intoler-Art: I tried very hard to not show too many ethnic and hippy style photos in this retrospective. I actually have many many more. That trend was huge. I really liked it. It sounds like a cliche, but the people that were into it were really low-key and easy-going.

@Mel & Lorena: I am really curious about that myself, too. I would love to meet them again, but am a little worried about the possible disappointments.

We have the names and contact addresses of all people, so perhaps for our 10th birthday in 2012, we can try to get some of these people together again and shoot their fashion now.

Two years still seems a long way off, but eight already passed like a flash!

AII!!!
happy birthday, Japanese streets!
gosh, this is so cool! I checked on a pretty decent day, I think.
Kjeld, are you doing anything special with the staff?

@Etsune: We should, but unfortunately we don’t. I am incredibly busy with two huge features for a European fashion magazine at the moment. Long days. Last week I interviewed through 2:00 am and I worked through 4:30 am this morning… Hope to have a little time for myself again after this is done!

@Kjeld:oh my gosh. that is a SERIOUS amount of work!! Do you even get enough sleep during these times?!? And as for the celebration, maybe you could celebrate it sometime later, like for New Years or something?

Wow! 8 years… And to think I started following your website just a few weeks ago! omedeto! And I´m really excited about the project for the 2012 anniversary! There is still a long way to go tho… because for you 8 years mean the beggining of an amazing project, but for me, it´s half my age! haha

@Edwin: Thanks!

@Julia: Half your age! So some of this stuff must feel really old to you. ^ _ – But yes, you are right, to me 8 years is indeed only the beggining of an amazing project. It would be super cool to be able to make it to 50. Imagine, half a century of documenting Japanese street fashion! ^^

hehee…some of these outfits remind me of how I was dressing in 2003…I just graduated high school and then went on to college…lots and lots of jeans, tshirts, and hoodies for me…high school I was alot riskier though…and my fashion has evolved a lot since then…just like these photos!!
