Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Very attractive, colorful mushrooms (if I may call it) cardigan.

It seems the common age of people being shot on Japanese Streets is 21! Just something I realised. I love her cardigan, it’s very quirky. I actually thought the burst of woollen colour was a separate garment. xD

Nice combination. With so many colors ovr her cardigan she remind me an Andean girl. :-)

Is she Hosaka’s friend? Both styles are similar: monotone with a touch of crazy colors.

Dude, lately it seems like you’ve only been shooting Comme De Garcons fans!! I love that cardigan… a sort of mix between an old lady’s knitted afghan… and the quiet flair CDG’s famous for. <3

@Mel: We actually look for people between 18 and 28, but once people find a job they often don’t have the time or the opportunity to do much on avant-garde fashion, so you end up with many students.

@Maria: I don’t know if Hosaka and Karin know each other. I’ll probably see Hosaka again next week and will then ask him.

@kagitsune: Yes, Comme des Garçons does seem to be more popular recently. I noticed that myself, too.

Very neat! The cardigan is just like the blankets that my Grandma has, and that’s definitely not a bad thing. They are the same wool material and have very similar color and pattern. I can’t say I like the jumbled look of the cardigan, but its a really cool idea to use that!

Please notice that Karin didn’t put on the cardigan like you’d usually do, that’s why it all looks so frumpled and bumpy. It is not rare to see people put on vests, cardigans and skirts upside down, twisted or in any other way the person can imagine.

I LOVE this look! And once I went to a store (Haight Ashbury), and they suggested I wear this loud print 80’s wind jacket as drop crotch pants. And he put it on, and it actually looked awesome. Haha…That store always gives so many suggestions for ways to wear stuff.

@Lactose Intoler-Art: The staff of Haight Ashbury write a blog. This is the shop you meant?

going to post & credit this pic, too, on my recap of street fashion! i saw she’s captured by RID STREET SNAP with the same outfit but in different places. she must have be such a street fashion star that day in her outfit! i like how she balanced different patterns, from the noisy & colorful clusters around the neck to the more quiter b/w checkboard pattern. btw, great great shots from the TFW, kjeld!! i’m following everyday!

@5am je t’aime: I was wondering when Rid and Drop would be posting Karin’s pictures, as photographers of both sites shot her as well (actually the Drop photographer saw me shooting Karin and was waiting for me to finish!). Rid came six days after JS posted Karin’s pictures. Shows how fast we are! ^ _ ^ And the colors of the JS shots look a lot better.

It is one of those moments that makes me very happy with all the effort and attention we put into JS.

Thanks for the encouragement about the JFW shots, 5am je t’aime. The number of comments are lower than usual on the JFW photographs, so I was wondering if we were doing OK… Maybe all those photographs going up everyday are a bit overwhelming?

I know that we are overwhelmed by the sheer number of images. WeI have been shooting several thousand a day this week; it has been extremely hard to keep up. Selecting, editing and uploading takes much time—when it goes well, between one and two hours per show.
