Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Seeing people with freckles is very refreshing for some reason.

Her outfit is really simple, but the colors are refreshing and i LOVE her accessories. Especially the little doll on her white bag. I also love the wig! And is Gulico her real name?

Just discovered your blog, all the outfits you manage to find out are great!!

@Arc: For Gulico that will be very refreshing to hear. Freckles are seen as a huge beauty handicap in Japan. The idea of them being charming has never really caught on here (yet).

@Etsune: We always make sure to use people’s real names, but sometimes people are already quite well-known by their nickname or model name. This is the case for Gulico; she is well-known as a model in magazines like KERA, so we went with her model name.

@La souris coquette: Thanks!

I’m becoming a big fan of Gulico’s style and look. Love those freckles, too!

She has such an incredible skin. I’ve always wanted freckles. So not fair I don’t have even one but I’m as fair as you can be. Although bcz of the lighting I seem very yellow in my pic :)).

@Theo: Gulico is great, isn’t she? Love to shoot her again.

@Lia: I am sure Gulico will be quite surprised, and happy, to hear that you find freckles so attractive that you actually want them. Your picture was shot in a dark place, I think? Probably inside? To show off your skin well, you really need daylight, preferably on a cloudy day.

@Kjeld: Oh! That makes sense. And so that leads to another question. It’s a question I’ve asked more than once about different people, but I feel it necessary to ask about her too. Is she pure Japanese? It’s her freckles that throw me off. I know only one pure Asian person who has freckles, so it’s something that makes me curious……

@Etsune: My personal guess is that probably more (Japanese) people have freckles than let on if they consider them unattractive. I remember being a bit taken aback the day my (100%) Korean grocery lady “suddenly” had freckles and I realized her beautiful “natural” porcelain complexion, which I had always envied, was in reality not quite as “natural” as I had thought. She,of course, was just as beautiful (and just as Korean) with her freckles.

@2046 & Etsune: 2046’s guess is on the mark. There are lots of people with freckles in Japan, but far less than in a country like the UK, for example. Freckles are triggered by exposure to sunlight, and most Japanese try very hard to avoid sunlight, thereby limiting the growth, and increase in darkness, of freckles.

You probably noticed our photos of people carrying parasols to protect themselves from the sun.

It is also common here to protect the skin from the sun with clothing: hats, long sleeves, gloves, special sleeves for the arms when wearing short sleeved tops, etc. See the sleeves that Chika and Yuka use for example.

And then there are cosmetics and make-up to make the skin look even better. Japanese people spend more money on skincare than people anywhere else in the world.

@KD: if japanese people spend a lot of money on skincare then my mom has some japanese blood on her xD she is careful with her skin specially hands, neck and face .‘’

I like her hair and make up, she totally knows what looks good on her ;)
Love her cellphone’s background and her keychains :P

@Maria: Your mother will love Japanese skin care products, if she doesn’t already use them. Because of the huge market here, there is extreme competition between companies, which results in lots of products of very high quality.

The keychain sends a strong message, don’t you think? Probably interpreted differently by each who sees it.

@KD: I’ll tell mom about this, so she supports me even more about going Japan someday xD
Keychain may be just an accessory to somes, even maybe it is just a necklace to her but it’s true some people would feel a message from it… you are totally right about it… and that makes me thinks that is very common in japan fashion to see a mix of strong and cute, in Gulico’s case is her accessories….just have to see the shot of the 2 bags to notice it

@Maria: Hope your mother sends you to Japan on the next plane. – _ ^

Interesting observation on the strong and cute. It would not surprise me if Gulico thinks that the handcuffs are actually quite cute.

@Mel: Haha! A very good reason to find them lovely. ^ _ –

Freckles are probably always something debatable in the world of beauty. I often see them as adding to a “cuteness” factor. People with cute freckles should definitely be proud of them (like Gulico).

Gulico, fabulous as always! ^^ Her eye make-up is always so clean (I can’t find a better word to describe it). Actually I think this hair colour looked better on her. But since she was a hair model, I suppose this jet black wasn’t necessary her choice. Not that it’s bad, but lighter shades suit her face better, don’t you think? ^^; I love how her bag is red inside, just like Bajowoo’s jacket, it makes me really happy! :D Also love the casual dress and the Melissa shoes. And her figure is still a source of constant amusement for me. It’s simply perfect! <3

Btw, I have the same necklace she has, except mine is silvery black(?), but I have been neglecting that accessory recently. She made me want to wear it again! ^^

And I love how she used Ichimaru Gin as her phone wallpaper! :D

@Arc: I am fully with you!

@gionbaby: I also felt that the lighter hair color looked better on Gulico, but I love how she always looks different, never giving you a chance to get used to one particular look. That red of the Zara bag got my attention, too. Kind of gives a feeling of anticipation, don’t you think? Like what a child feels the night before Christmas.

Amazing that you have the same necklace! You wouldn’t happen to know who makes them, would you? Gulico didn’t know it.

Adorable. Love the cool colours with a splash of hot pink. Similar to Asako (with matching hair, lips), she has matching eye shadow, lipstick, and nail polish. Also, a very similar oversize studded bracelet… those seem to be quite the trend in Japan. I thought I caught a glimpse of one walking through my campus, but it could be the lack of morning java.

@petitesam: Yes, I see those studded bracelets a lot recently. Maybe another JS fan on campus? LOL

@Kjeld Duits: I’m afraid I don’t know either. :( I bought it once in my home-town from a street vendor, but that was a relatively long time ago.
