Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

So different from the previous look! She looks very grown up! Her phone charm at the end was a surprise! xD

@Mel: Asako told me that she changed to this kind of style just two months ago. She had bought the lipstick just before she ran into me. Lucky me!

A few years ago I remember it was weird to wear pants any higher than the hips. I’ve been surprised to see even people my age (I’m a senior in high school) in my area tucking their shirts into pants or a skirt above their belly button. The way people used to talk about it, I imagined it would never come back in style but it’s completely safe to wear now! My original response to the two ways to wear the shirt was to say I liked it better untucked but it really does look good both ways. Each has a completely different effect.

@Arc: I love reading the kind of feedback you give here. It gives great insight into what the trends are in different places. Where are you located, Arc?

This is a georgeous look! As for me, I’ve always kind of liked the high waisted look; I think it’s my Victorian bent. I also really liked what Arc said about higher waists becoming more acceptable and I hope it wends it’s way here soon (east coast US). I am mightily tired of the eyefuls fo boxers, briefs, and b*ttcrack I am subjected to on a daily basis T_T

@Kjeld it’s great to hear that : D I do my best to contribute what I can
I am actually east coast US too (North Carolina so it isn’t exactly fashion central)

I really just love EVERYTHING about this! This is such a wonderfully edgy outfit! I love the tartan print pants and the black shirt together! It has a sort of dark, elegant look to it without looking too overly gothic. I also love the gold accessories (especially that studded bracelet!) and the shoes. AND THE PURSE! THe black bow is so cute!

Great look, and love the lipstick. Plum/dark tones for lipsticks will be in this autumn, and can’t wait to try on the one my friend sent me from Germany, but it takes a lot of confidence to wear a bold lipstick, especially in Japan where glosses and nudy tones are a favorite. And fox tail! Wow!

@2046: I am with you. I have never been quite fond of the prison pants look myself.

@Arc: I have always thought of the East Coast as being far more fashionable than the rest of the US, but I guess it is mostly in the North? Or maybe even only New York City?

@Etsune: Well said. I think Asako’s been able to create a very stylish look, that has a whim of gothic without crossing any specific lines. I am really impressed by her sense of fashion.

@Lia: I think that belt really finishes Asako’s look.

@Alice: The tail is actually a fur stole. Tails are really popular at the moment, but Asako told me that she didn’t have one. So she became inventive and folded her stole in such a way that it looks like a tail. Shows again how important it is to have a good look at everything in your wardrobe and to let your creative juices flow.

Usually I look to clothes and accessories but this time what caught my eye the most it’s her lip stick, that red hot looks great on her and all the outfit xD
Of course pants are totally awesomeee!

@KD: I’m so happy to read that ‘cause I want to be a photographer n_n

@Maria: Haha. Cool.

My teacher of Dutch (I grew up in the Netherlands) made a very interesting comment some years ago. I searched for him in order to thank him for his influence and finally found him through the internet.

When I told him that I had written a book, he told me he knew and had read it. Then I thanked him for what he had done, and that it had helped me to become a writer.

It was quite a surprise when he told me, “you have not become a writer.”

I was shocked; I thought he didn’t like my book. Then, he continued and said, “you have always been a writer.” He was still the great teacher that I remembered.

Don’t want to be a photographer. Go and be one now. Shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Read books about photography (both the skills and the art), study. Whenever you have the chance. Develop your eyes, develop your skills.

Photography is not a way to make money, it is a way of looking at the world. You can then use your way of looking at the world to earn a living if you want to.

I love how her hair and make up are also red and black!

I’m really curious about what brand of make up these fashionable people use, would you mind asking the people you shoot what make up they use? Thanks!

Alice

@Alice: Asako actually showed me her make-up. The lipstick was from MAC if I am not mistaken. I don’t remember the rest. Sorry!

I have considered before to ask about cosmetics, but because we already take so much time from the people we shoot I always decided against it. If I can think of a way to do it that doesn’t impose on the people more than we already do, we will definitely ask!

@KD: wow, thanks a lot for that comment, I never thought of photography as something that could make me earn money but if I do enjoy it and someone pays me for doing what I like that would be great
really thanks ^^

@Kjeld That is likely to be true, I don’t really know. I do know that many cities here are growing quickly so in the future I’m sure there will be an increase in “fashionableness”.

Arc

@Arc: JS depends on you to spread the word and increase your area’s “fashionableness.” ^ _ – ^ _ –

This is so ironic.. I recently did a rendering of a pair of pants identical to these (only in a mustard solid, not plaid) and a shirt very very similar for one of my classes. I love that the harem pant is so deceptive, it looks so much like a skirt.

But Kjeld, you are very right in saying that she spans many spectrum without containing herself into a particular ‘style.’ She matches perfectly (hair, lips, skirt), looks polished, and could go to a club or an interview (maybe not in Japan, haha!) I have to admit my favorite part is the smile at the end. :)

@petitesam: Amazing coïncidence about your rendering! Incidentally, Asako pulled up the pants to just below her knees, but they can actually reach until her ankles. She showed me, and it created a totally different look.

Depending on the kind of work, she could do an interview like this in Japan as well. I really hope Asako will choose some work where she can express herself like this.

WOW! It is popular to see high wasted skirts with the tops tucked in and a belt but not so much pants. Not yet, that is. . .the cool weather is just setting in and I can’t wait to see what comes up. haha. . .pun.
