Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Those stockings! My dream stockings at the moment :P (sniffing for a pair). I really love the toughness of her look, I’m into looking tough most of the time.

i love those stockings!

@Lia & Julie: It was the stockings that first got my attention; I don’t think I have ever seen them before. I love it when playfulness and cool come together this well.

I’m not sure why you recently changed the size of the image you send by email— but its too small now to really see any detail. And not possible to enlarge from my computer. So I am unsuscribing. Zanen desu ne!

@Susan: The past few months, we have had to pay extremely high extra fees for overages on our server. I am trying to find out what is causing this. Most probably the small images are just temporary. The links to the actual pages are still in the newsletter, so you can still quickly get to the ones that attract your attention.

I love this outfit! It’s very edgy! Especially the necklace. I LOVE stuff like that! The nail polish also looks really good on her.
And I love the shoes. Not necessarily with the outfit, but I love them nonetheless.
And I have a question for you, Kjeld. Has anyone ever rejected you when you ask them to take pictures of their fashion?

Sep 26, 2010 (4445 days ago)

@Etsune: I don’t think of it as rejecting me, but I understand what you mean. It occasionally happens, but not very often. Sometimes a few times a day, sometimes not at all for weeks. Some people are just too shy, others in a hurry or on a short break from their work, and maybe 1 or 2 people a year just don’t want to be in a fashion magazine.

Japanese people in general are extra-ordinarily open to this and cooperative. I am really grateful for that. Therefore, the JS policy that if there must be criticism on the fashion, to do it in a mature, positive and constructive way. Thankfully, this is rarely a problem. Our commenters are great. For that I am grateful, too!

Love the look! Really edgy. Her coral red necklace POPS like wow! Not to talk about how awesome the skeleton stockings are. Love how she only wears the spiderweb earring in one ear. It reminds me of the 80’s a bit. ^^ And the Divided Jacket is an A+! I just Googled BEATRiCE BOYLE and I must say her shirt designs are truly awesome. <33

@Lia: Once I saw Gulico wearing very similar ones in KERA magazine. Unfortunately there wasn’t any useful information on where she got those. :/ I wanted a pair too. They are awesome! <3 They probably sell them somewhere in Harajuku. What do you think, Kjeld?

Oct 4, 2010 (4438 days ago)

@gionbaby: Thanks for the image search on BEATRiCE BOYLE; it made me find these great Nicholas Kirkwood shoes.

@Lia & gionbaby: Makimi herself got the stockings in Harajuku, so they’re definitely for sale there, or were at some time. I have never seen them before, and unfortunately Makimi didn’t have a brand name.

I googled for skeleton bones pantyhose and found some English language sites selling similar ones (mostly as a party novelty it appears), but on many of the pages buyers complain about the quality, so do some research before you send money!

One brand that I found in the US, that appears to have a good name, is MUSIC LEGS (the site is only for retailers, though…). Here is a Japanese site selling them, but they carry only one size. That site has a great page with an overview of the items they sell. Pretty cool.

@Kjeld Duits: OMG, these shoes look like a dream!! <333 I wish they wouldn’t be so expensive. ;_;

I’ve heard about Music Legs before! It was mentioned a few times in Kera magazine.
