Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

I really like this look. I can’t put my finger on it, I just like it.

@Mel: It looks really good on Mori-san, doesn’t it? I think loose straight outfits like these fit the Asian physique. Last month I shot in Pakistan, and this look reminds me just a tiny bit of the silhouette of the salwar kameez.

@KD: oh you are right, it looks kinda similar!
In fact, in the first shot, his skin looks darker than in the rest on the photos, he didn’t look 100% jap to me in that shot xD

Actually that shirt on him looks more like a blouse to me, but it’s really AWESOME! (^ 0 ^)

“I think loose straight outfits like these fit the Asian physique.” <— I know what you mean and I have to agree with you. I noticed it too. And I think it’s not necessarily because they are generally quite thin, but because they are SLENDER. If you know what I mean. Especially men. I love it! (^ __ ^;;)

It’s a shame that brand’s out of business as the shirt is pretty cool. Very original, yet has something classical about it. Very renaissance retro with that collar :P.

Very interesting look. I think that Number Nine even had a store in New York at one point…Too bad! :(

@Kjeld The image search was really interesting. I noticed a lot of oversized ethnic shirts in Tokyo, and at the “cool” vintage shops. Haha.

@Maria: I thought the same thing. I actually asked him if people ever asked if he was foreign. he said “no…”

@gionbaby: Yes, I understand exactly what you mean. That’s why kimono also looks so good on Japanese; I have seen very few Westerners that look really good in a kimono or yukata.

@Lia & Lactose Intoler-Art: Yeah, really too bad about Number Nine. Let’s hope there will be an encore.

Glad you enjoyed the image search, Lactose. Those were mainly fashion photos. When you actually look at the people on the street of Pakistan, you will find the likeness even more striking.

I love his look , he rocks ! I’ve to admit that it’s quite rare in japan but Mori has a good style and a good sense of fashion, congrats !

I mentioned an encore of Number Nine. Actually there is already. Number Nine’s Takahiro Miyashita opened his new venture the Soloist in Tokyo’s Azabu district earlier this year.

I really like the tone and texture of his line/silk shirt? It looks very casual and unpretentious yet very chic. Goes well when contrasted with the shorts, i thought it was a skirt at first. Very nice.

Anyone know if this japanese fashions has spread to China also?
