Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

@Julie, sabrina & Jini: It was Haruna’s dress that caught my eye, and the hair and shoes that kept my attention. Looking at Haruna’s dress somehow makes me feel cheerful. Do you feel that, too?

i’ve grown accustomed to see japanese people pile up clothes with no coordination among the pieces.
it was surely refreshing to see the simple dress of this girl. simple and chic
it caught the eye. the accessories were great too it made the perfect mix.

@jaderdavila: Your comment, “no coordination among the pieces,” attracted my attention. There’s lots of coordination, actually, but not a coordination that many of us are used to. Japanese people have grown up seeing kimono around them, and have gotten accustomed to combining colors, textures and designs that according to what we have learnt do not match. I think combining disparate pieces into something uniquely new and complete is what makes Japanese street fashion Japanese.

I am totally with you on the beautiful simplicity of Harauna’s dress, though. Very appropriate for the hot weather that we’re experiencing in Japan at the moment!

LOVE that dress!! Too bad US is soo painfully slow to trends, maybe we’ll see this here
next summer.
This look (vibrant, painterly dresses/tunics) is very much in style now in Italy. :)

I love this outfit. Wish I could get this dress & those shoes right now.
Are her ear piercings actually clip-ons? If they are, they are totally my kind of piercings, LOL.

@Marie: No kidding? In Italy?

@Eikochan: They are real piercings, I am afraid.
