Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

@sabrina: I love the bag and the sunglasses. too. Cool, eh!

@Mel: Just messing with your brains, Mel. ^ _ –
Actually, it was a slip of the mouse (or mouse pad, rather). Thanks for making me aware of it!

@nannaho: It now says girls, I fixed it.

I don’t know why, but girls on bikes are generally quite stylish (especially if the bike is vintage or has a basket on it). In any case, this girl certainly has the look of a furious pedaler. Kjeld, I hope you didn’t have to chase her down the street for too long before getting her attention. :)

@Theo: LOL. No, Yama rode straight into my arms. She actually works at Tokyo Bopper, a very cool shoe store in Harajuku. I previously shot 1 or 2 more people who worked here. It is not that they are walking around with a sign saying they work there. They just happen to be cool, so they catch my eye.

LOVE Yama, her style is ALWAYS so great and consistent. She is an early Harajuku/FRUiTS girl, and has kept true to early Harajuku culture and her style, but still makes it relevant for today. I am a big fan of her. And I LOVE her brain bag! Tokyo bopper is the best, so many Harajuku kids are starting to wear these big platformed shoes again. Usually from Belly Button or Tokyo Bopper too.

@Lactose Intoler-Art: Ah, you know Yama! Isn’t that brain bag something? I love the brains of someone coming up with a brain bag. You are absolutely right about the platformed shoes. I have been shooting quite a few already actually. More coming soon!

That is one outlandish bag, love it! Her whole outfit is cool, everything fits nice together.

@Jini: Great bag, eh!

I like the style and the model, however, I don’t like the bag. It looks a bit like an intestine, and something I could make myself. :\

@Kjeld; yeah :)

@Chelsea; I think the great thing about Japanese fashion is that a lot of it is very DIY-able. And about the bag looking like intestines, it could look like brains too, it’s just your own interpretation I guess :)

Oh thank God Kjeld.

Mel

@Mel: _ Sorry for giving you such a fright!

@Jini: Totally agree with you about the DIY-ability of Japanese fashion and making use of your own interpretation. Japanese fashion and this site is all about creativity.

ebz: Marimekko is cute. eh! But quite expensive; Yama paid 1,500 yen for this one pair.

Actually, I got lucky with Yama’s expression in the top image. A German camera team was shooting a mini-documentary on JAPANESE STREETS the past few days (they followed Emi, Marie and me). I was explaining to Yama why there was a TV camera shooting as well, and when she showed her surprise I just happened to be in the right position.
