Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Love her outfit and she’s way cute,
I dress like this on pretty much a daily basis myself. :D

@Meg Do you use your own hair, or a wig like Nao?

I use my own hair. :)

@Meg: Your photo is small, it looks like you have beautiful hair, actually. In Japan, wigs are extremely common. Especially for punk, lolita and visual kei fashion.

Thank you, I heard from a friend that they are common especially in the fairer shade’s.
I was actually thinking about getting a wig,
Can’t stand the thought of damaging my hair with bleach.

@Meg: The blonde wigs are more obvious, but black wigs like Nao’s are just as common. Because they look so natural, you don’t know unless somebody tells you that it’s a wig.

Yes, definitely keep the bleach away from your precious hair!

Not a problem, back in the day when I was about 12 my mom tried to make me a blonde.
Did not know a thing about doing hair, bleached my hair twice(in one day no less!)to get me to an ugly orangey-yellow color, a lot of my hair fell out and the rest felt like hay.(I never wanted my hair blonde anyway!)

Yaaagh, sounds like a horror story! That was once and never again, I assume?

It was pure and unbelievable horror!
I’m also half hispanic so it was terrible with my skin tone, no dye or bleach has touched my hair since.

Half Hispanic? I had never guessed from your photo. Too small, probably. Maybe it was good to have such a terrible experience so young. It has probably saved your hair from worse abuse!

Most people don’t, I’m actually kinda pale and have green eye’s.
It’s only really noticeable in the hotter month’s I get pretty tan, people ask me quite often if I speak english, I find it funny. :)

Glad you have a good sense of humor. That could easily become irritating. I speak several languages, but all of them with a slight accent. Sometimes it gets tiring to have to explain where you’re from to every single new person you meet! ^ _ ^

Indeed it does get irritating sometimes, I went to Hawaii for my birthday and got so tan that all the other tourist’s were asking me for direction’s and how to pronounce this or that in hawaiian for the rest of my stay(they thought I was a local).

Meg

Haha, that’s funny. No matter how good my tan, I’ll never be mistaken for a local in Japan!

Yes indeed, that’s a place I won’t get mistaken for a local either. :D

I am often surprised when someone is wearing a wig even though it is popular in Japan for certain styles. I guess I put a lot of value and pride in my own hair ^^;

She got those pants for a nice price!

@Arc: It took me some time to get used to, too. But it allows people to change their hairstyle on a daily basis, including not wearing a wig. I am a huge fan of choice. ^ _ –

@Lia: LOL!
