Kjeld Duits: @petitesam: Mijn hond eet kaas. I love that! I have never heard anyone say that before and can’t imagine how you picked it up. The funny things is, I had the opposite experience when returning to the Netherlands for the first time after leaving 8 years earlier. During that time, I had picked up an English accent and lots of Dutch people started to speak English to me! Or they told me how good my Dutch was. That was embarrassing, too, as you imagine. I just politely thanked them without saying that I was actually Dutch. LOL
petitesam: @Kjeld: Yes, my Oma and Opa decided on Canada since they were liberated from occupation by Canadian soldiers. We as a family regret not speaking Dutch with each other, and it was quite embarrassing when I went to Amsterdam two summers ago. My last name is a very common Dutch name, so every time I used something with my name on it (card, passport, etc), they would speak Dutch to me! Flattering yes, but not when the only Dutch I know is: Mijn hond eet kaas
Kjeld Duits: @petitesam: Your grandparents are from Holland? As you know, lots of Dutch people emigrated to Canada, esp. after WWII. Too bad you can’t speak Dutch. But it is not a great loss, there are not that many countries where you can use it. ^ _ –
