Color on the Street: Black

We saw lots of black and grey in the A/W collections of the Japan Fashion Week. Recently we see the same trend on the street

Officially it is spring, and lots of people have changed into bright and cheerful colors.

But the weather in Japan has been awful the past few weeks. Cloudy, wet and cold. Not at all the kind of weather that this month of cherry blossom and rhodondendron usually has on offer. Perhaps that is why we’ve been seeing so many dark colors on the street, especially black and grey.

Thankfully, many people wear this black combined with white, or accent it with color. A splash of red, shocking pink or quiet blue; they all stand out even more because they’re framed in black.

Excellent observation – the unseasonal weather and the color choices. I am glad that we’re seeing the bright color pops. Tokyo’s sense of whimsy can’t be completely chased away by a cloudy month! :D

kagitsune: Absolutely. And thankfully, in Japan no trend evers conquers an overwhelming number of people. There are always many trends all happening at the same time. So, even though we see lots of black and grey, there are also lots of people who are into colors, like Yui and Emi.

Well , I`m running my own t-shirt print shop here in Osaka and I have to say that black has always been the most requested garment color. But then when you pop outside the streets are filled with people wearing anything else then black.
Of course apart from the Dragon Ball hairstyle posse that works as male escort.

@Matthias: Interesting. Both your shop and the JS photographers both focus on a very specific segment of Japan, I think. We only look at people who are really into (street) fashion. Love this expression: Dragon Ball hairstyle posse!

I love black! Probably because it’s a very save colour~so is grey. I must say black combined with an outstanding colour is a popular style in Hong Kong, at least the few times I’ve been there, that’s what I notices, black or pastel colours combined with a outstanding colour

@Jini: I think black with an outstanding color is really cool, but it is not so easy to pull it off. I am really looking forward to this autumn and winter; hope people will make this trend happen!

*noticed haha
and you think so? I think black is safe, so also easy. But I too, hope that black with an outstanding colour will become a trend, because my closet is filled with colour…weird for someone who loves black eh?

LOL, that is funny Jini. But that should make it easy for you to make some nice combinations of an outstanding color with black.
