Tokyo based Photographer Hal used to carry his equipment to clubs and parties to snap colorful couples. In his recent project, Couple Jam, he has used couple’s bathtubs as the backdrop.

Creative Couples – Photographer Hal’s latest project.
We caught up with Photographer Hal to ask him a few questions about his recently released book, Couple Jam. This week and next we share Photographer Hal’s thoughts and tips.
Deanne: After the great success of your Couple Jam book you must have many couples begging to have their photo taken by you.
Photographer Hal: Yes, I have had many requests via email from couples asking me to take photos of them. The Couple Jam project has only just begun, I would like to continue with this theme and add more interesting couple shots. If there are couples out there interested in being models, I would like to hear from them.

Deanne: Are there any couples that you approach who refuse to have their photo taken?
Photographer Hal: When I go out I usually take my small photo book of models with me so that I am always ready to show my work if I bump into strangers who I think might suit my work. People generally have an instant reaction to my work they either want to be part of it or not.
Deanne: You have taken on an interesting project by entering people’s bathrooms. Do you have any funny or quirky stories from your photo shoots for Couple Jam?
Photographer Hal: I can’t think of any right now but I will say that the bathroom is often the most private place in a house. When I enter someone’s apartment they are open to showing me their bedroom or kitchen, but often the bathroom is off limits.
I start each photo shoot by cleaning the bathroom, perhaps that is the most quirky thing I have to share.

Deanne: So where can we find your latest book, Couple Jam?
Photographer Hal: It is being sold in book stores in Tokyo, Shibuya Tower records, Shibuya Libro, Aoyama Book Center and Village Vanguard Shinjuku as well as mememachine gallery and Tokyo Made.
