Yokai—Japanese Ghosts

Under the title Yokai University SF Campus, NEW PEOPLE is offering this free exhibition of Japanese ghosts at the VIZ Cinema Lobby (B-level at NEW PEOPLE) from Friday, October 23 through Friday November 6, 2009.

Straight from the Yokai (immortal spirits) capital of Kyoto, this special exhibition consists of yokai related books, art prints and other media.

Especially interesting are the Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints by master artist Hokusai Katsushika, known for his Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido Road.

The exhibit also features artwork by yokai manga pioneer Shigeru Mizuki, who created the popular series GeGeGe No Kitaro.

As part of the two week celebration, Tokyo-based writer Matt Alt will give a FREE yokai lecture at NEW PEOPLE. Alt chronicled Japan’s long love affair with monsters and spirits in the book Yokai Attack!: The Japanese Monster Survival Guide with co-author Hiroko Yoda. It is the first English language yokai guidebook.

The lecture gives history and insights and takes place on Saturday October 31, 2009 from 1 – 2:30 pm at VIZ Cinema.

Yokai Attack! and a special collection of yokai themed products will be available for purchase at NEW PEOPLE the Store.

This free exhibition only appears at NEW PEOPLE, so don’t miss it. Get into the Halloween spirit Japanese style!

Just in time for Halloween, some of Japan’s best loved ghosts and spirits are visiting the recently opened NEW PEOPLE, a combined shop, movie theater and art space focusing on Japanese pop culture in San Fransisco.

Halloween is not so popular (yet). There are some parties at clubs, and shops sell Halloween goods, but kids don’t go out in costume to collect candy. I wonder if it ever will be popular—it seems too foreign for Japan.
