It will be the first permanent stores that Baby, The Stars Shine Bright (see photos) and Black Peace Now (see photos) will open in the United States.
6%DOKIDOKI (see photos) and SOU • SOU are not opening permanent stores and are part of a short-term rotating program.
NEW PEOPLE will be located at 1746 Post Street and is a project of VIZ Pictures, a Japanese live-action film distributor and producer.
The fashion brands will be located on the second floor of the building, while the first floor will feature a café, the mezanine a pop heaven and the third floor a gallery for emerging artists that draw their inspiration from Japanese popular culture.
The building’s basement will house a cinema, the only one in the US primarily dedicated to Japanese films, documentaries and anime.
The fashion shops, though, will undoubtedly become one of the buildings main attractions. “Fashion is the latest medium to play a significant role in the ongoing evolution of Japanese popular culture that has captivated the world,” says Seiji Horibuchi, the founder and CEO of VIZ Pictures and the founder of VIZ Media.
“Anime, manga and Japanese film are internationally known and loved. With NEW PEOPLE, we celebrate all of those genres and we’ll also transcend them by giving the U.S. a look at entirely new sides of contents from Japan including these innovators of Harajuku fashion.”

Baby, The Stars Shine Bright is one of Japan’s most popular lolita brands. It already has a store in Paris. Black Peace Now is a punk/gothic crossover fashion brand and also produces Peace Now, which is a bit more casual in its approach. Both brands often show up in the JAPANESE STREETS street shoots (click on the see photos links above).
6%DOKIDOKI offers brightly colored kitsch style accessories that are 100% fun. Doki doki means to be excited, as in your heart beating so fast you can hear it go doki doki. I often visit their delightful tiny shop in the back-streets of Harajuku and always find something new.
Kyoto based SOU • SOU will sell tabi, traditional Japanese socks that the brand has transformed into shoes with amazing graphic patterns. SOU • SOU’s tabi are similar to the type of tabi worn by Japanese construction workers and other workmen, which are actually used as shoes.
The NEW PEOPLE building, now under construction, will feature a striking 3-floor transparent glass façade bringing a futuristic look to this historic area in San Fransisco. It is one of only three Japantowns still surviving in the US.
