The most common of these hair bands are made of thin leather strips (left), or made of the wearer’s hair itself (right). Some also use hair extensions, which can be bought just about everywhere these days.
Because they are worn extremely low—often right on the forehead—they are really just for display instead of a real functional hair band.
When you get really creative you can string some colored wool through a hair band made of your own hair, or an extension. Extensions with wool already woven in can also be bought.
A more traditional hair band, but the color, ribbons and thin circumference, as well as the low position, give it a totally different look.
Four steps to creating a literal hair band
1. Pick a pluck of hair. Not too much, the band should be an accent only.
2. Braid it tightly.
3. Pull the braided strand of hair across your forehead, and put the end just above your temple.
4. Attach the strand with a hairpin. Use more than one if necessary.
