Tokyo Runway S/S 2008

Tokyo Runway is like Tokyo Girls Collection except that its not. It’s more like the Tokyo 20-30 Market Collection. And it had its first hurrah on Sunday.

(if you dont know what TGC is, see my quick review here).

They made it seem like it was going to be a huge event with normal consumers able to participate, but I`m suspect now that it actually didn’t turn out to be that way as most girls in the front row were too interested in their hair and posture and staring out straight in front of them to be normal.

Despite the cold (it was outside, at night, at the brand-new Akasaka Sacas megacomplex for TBS Broadcasting Network). It was great fun, with a high production, an ACTUAL elevated runway, and lots of lights and good music. I even enjoyed being subject to “gyaru” Shibuya-style (I mean *cough*20-30 Market) brands.

Out of the 10 brands presenting- including Double Standard Clothing, Auila Aila, Banner Barret, Greed, Ato, Ylang Ylang… SLY and of course DressCamp owned the runway. Dresscamp showed a few pieces from the new collection which was apparently sponsored by JAL hence the crane motif on the couture-like gowns.

By the by, and I digress—- but many may be surprised to hear that Iwaya Toyasu, the designer, has resigned from the brand. I don’t know what will happen to him (it appears that DressCamp will stay in business as usual, and continue to show in Paris) but at the Tokyo Runway afterparty I bumped into Iwaya and asked him what his plans are-
The verdict? …a shrug. And, “Maybe I`ll start my own brand. In Paris, of course”

I for one am very sad to hear this news.

And on another note, NO one could have pulled off that DressCamp pink frilly uber chic mess of a flamenco bomb like Tominaga Ai could. NO one. That woman positively radiates. At the afterparty we rewatched the show and when she appeared she got a standing ovation—too bad she didn’t show up to receive it though.

It would be nice to see a little more support media-wise for next season’s TR. And maybe they could skip Ylang Ylang?even worse than the fried blue hair-pieces, those little Charleston weave basket hat things belong in the depths of a fashionless afterlife.
