ARTiSM Market 01, Tokyo

The first ARTiSM Market, an exhibition and sale of items created by underground artists took place in Tokyo today. A brief impression…

Over 250 subculture and underground artists and designers participated in today’s first ARTiSM Market in Tokyo. From Steam Punk to Lolita, from Shironori to Cyber, just about every subculture active in Japan could be found here. They sold everything from CD’s to art to accessories to clothing.

There were way too many artists to check them all out in the few hours that the event took place. It was immensely inspiring and I hope the next ARTiSM Market will be organized soon!

Kjeld Duits About the Author

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

This reminds me of my local fan conventions’ artist alleys; so much creativity put towards making amazing items! I don’t know if I could have made it through this market because the amount of must-have items is already overwhelming just from your photos. I would want to buy everything! It seems like this market was fun even just to see everyone’s beautiful fashion :3

@Kjeld: Thanks!! SaTaN is actually one of my favorite bands! Surprisingly I have met others who know of them in the American Jrock scene, most likely thanks to Tainted Reality who used to sell their CDs back when they were part of Starwave Records. When I heard that you covered the event I was crossing my fingers that SaTaN would make an appearance, so thank you again!

@June: Glad I was able to answer your wishes. ^^ There were over 250 artists at this event and the top image shows only about a third of the whole event space. The booths consisted just of small tables, that’s why so many people fit in. I think that I perhaps covered just a quarter of the people during the 4 hours that I was there…
