Rocking Horse Shoes in Harajuku

Rocking horse shoes have become extremely popular in Tokyo’s Harajuku

Bookmark and Share

Just a year ago, rocking horse shoes were still kind of a novelty in Japan, but we now see them more and more. Here are some recent photos we took of rocking horse shoes in Tokyo’s trendy fashion district of Harajuku. Most of the rocking horse shoes we see are designed by Vivienne Westwood, but I also found a nice variation on the theme by Unbilical.

So you can get your own pair of rocking chair shoes, we have set up a special rocking horse shoe section in our eBay affiliate shop.

How popular are rocking chair shoes where you live?

I love it!! I remember the winged Vivienne Westwood shoes that are super popular are also a little bit rocking horse shoe-esque. I remember the girl that Emi shot the day I was with her was wearing them, as well as a little bird on her head. So cool! I hope you do more trend posts like this! I don’t think I’ve seen anyone around here wear them, but I totally believe they are a new big trend coming up..That and high platform in general! I see some early 2000’s vibes already coming back in Tokyo. Once its “out”, its “in” right?

@Lactose Intoler-Art: True. Once people have forgotten about a trend it feels new again and has a chance to return. I love the winged shoes as well. I don’t think I have posted about that yet. Thanks for mentioning them!

I actually thought about adding some samples of the Vivienne Westwood winged shoes to this post, but it didn’t seem appropriate.

Oh, I do love me some platforms. It probably comes with the territory when you’re only 5’1” though. I adore the rocking-horse style, but have not seen anyone wearing anything similar here in Indy. Guess I will just have to start it.

Re the old trends coming back comment, that’s very funny to me considering that yesterday, when I wore my Demonia gothic platform boots to my family’s Christmas, my uncle asked me if I’d been shopping at Gene Simmons’ yard sale, and my little sister told me I looked like a Spice Girl. I found myself laughing too hard to come up with a response for those.

@Leah B.: A mixture of Gene Simmons and Spice Girl—my, you’ve made me awfully curious about what you looked like. Yes, do start the rocking horse shoe style in Indy!

@Kjeld Maybe I’ll put the whole getup back on and get some pics. I’ll link ya to it if I do. I was actually thinking somewhat of the Joss Whedon series “Firefly” when I put it together. Chinese silk brocade sleeveless top, my black Cornerstone t-shirt with the longhorn-skull design, black Western-style belt with a floral embossed design, skinny jeans, and the platform Demonia “Trashville” boots.

If I do put down the $$ for the rocking-horse boots, I’ll make sure to do it from your affiliate store. Been thinking about setting up something similar on my own fashion blog, if I can figure out the best way to do so.

I wore the shoe in 2002, white leather thongs, they were awsome but took me a while to walk properly in them!

A novelty in 2009? Frankly I doubt it, I have seen it regurlalry on lolitas and people featured in fruits at least for a decade, they are not exactly mainstream everywhere but they are not an uncommon sight.

Jan 26, 2011 (3961 days ago)

@Romanticide: Yes, they have been around for a long time and were really popular when they first came out, too. But last year they exploded way beyond the lolita scene and the small number of people that fruits focuses on. When I was scouting in Harajuku, I would see several pairs an hour, all day long. We haven’t seen that kind of popularity since they were first popular a decade ago or so.

Oh boy, here we go. Saw the rocking horse shoes on pg 116 of the March issue of Glamour here in the US. (also saw a LOT of dolly kei-ish stuff on Betsey Johnson’s runway and a few other shows at NYFW)

Super cool and awesome rocking horse shoes!I think these shoes are meant for people that would want to make outrageous fashion statements saying to everybody this could be a new trend.I am one of those people willing to take risky fashion risks.

I’ve got myself a pair and I really love them!! they are so comfortable and I try to wear them as often as I can, but I think people in Belgium don’t really seem to know them, because they will glaze at me with a rather confused look on their face ^^

@hannah: Cool, I’m glad that you could find a pair that you like and that fit. Interesting to read that the people in Belgium are so surprised by these shoes. You’ll get them used to it. ^_-
