Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Muchacha… seems that they like appliques. I’d like to do something similar, but with (really) old kimonos instead. :D

@kagitsune: I like appliques done with kimono.

Muchacha is made by Japanese designer Makako Shinya. She studied at Osaka’s Mode Gakuen, and started her brand in 1994. She calls the concept behind her clothing Happy clothing with heart.

Muchacha clothes feature cuddly rabbits, giant mushrooms, fluttering butterflies and lots of images you expect to find in children’s books. Muchacha fabrics apparently come from Okinawa, Japan’s sun-drenched islands in the south. It is really a kiddies label, but with a true Japanese bohemian twist. Masako Shinya has a page on ZozoPeople. She sells her stuff on ZozoTown (as well as many other places).

Another great outfit, only this one is a little more playful than some recent ones. :) Love her necklace, looks like it could double as a coin purse! The appliques are gorgeous, and slightly dreamy. Great colours, too. But, do you think she needs a smaller size in her shoes? Haha.

@petitesam: You see that a lot in Japan; people wearing larger sizes shoes. I think it may have something to do with wearing over-sized slippers at home, and Japanese style sandals. Many people also don’t zip up their boots, and I have seen countless people who don’t bother untying their laces and just flatten the quarters (the part of the shoe that covers the sides and the back of the foot), effectively creating slippers out of sneakers and other shoes. I guess some people just don’t like a snug fit…

She’s really great, and original! I haven’t seen a lot of this color green yet on street style people..Would be interesting to see if this becomes a popular color in Tokyo.

Good observation about the color. I just checked the colors we covered this year, and this green has indeed not popped up yet.

I love this outfit!!! Especially the skirt- and this not only cause I love rabbits.
I like the balance between decent and playful very much. This is what makes all her outfit individual.

@tabisaki: Yes, Honami manages to stand on that razor thin edge between mainstream fashion and non-conformism, and she carries it off real well.

Really glad to have been able to inspire you, SACRAMENTO!

Incidentally, Muchacha has a wonderful website as well as an online shop. It is all in Japanese, so if you don't read Japanese, I recommend using Rikaichan
