Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

great shot! I’m loving the wind-blown scarf and skirt. The shoes are a bit wierd though.

the boots are like a camel’s toe.
never seen something like that.
it’s a great idea.
new ideas is what life is all about.

actually, the shoes remind me of tabi shoes… with a boot heel. xD Very interesting. But wow, 70,000 yen?? I guess that pays for the novelty/difficult construction… o_o;

I like her entire outfit except for her boots…they just look mismatching.

Yes, these boots are definitely based on tabi. So to Japanese they look very familiar and comfy. You need special tabi socks with a split toe thumb for them. You can buy these tabi socks in our eBay associate store. Some of them are cuddly cute!

Incidentally, I was surprised to see that Belgian designer Martin Margiela is this familiar with Japanese fashion.

@kagitsune: I think the 70,000 yen pays mostly for Martin Margiela’s name. His designs are deeply admired in Japan, and it appears that he repays the favor.

This is nothing less than fantastic! It’s modern, chic, great colour scheme, and HOLY F*CK I love those shoes!! Great play on a traditional look. Now if only I could get them for less than 70,000 yen.. not your typical shoe to be knocked off at the local Target. _ Great job for the weekend, Kjeld!!

She looks great, I love her haircut, and of course the Martin Margiela Tabi Boots. And yes, its definitely the name brand that makes them so expensive. I think you can get some tabi boots on ebay that are much cheaper, but also look cheaper. Are tabi boots/ ankle boots/shoes expensive in Japan? About how much do they cost? I might buy some this summer.

@Lactose Intoler-Art: Yeeeesssss, finally a comment on Misato’s hair. I love that cut; it really surprised me that not a single person commented on it yet. I guess the boots got all the attention…

You can get some pretty cheap tabi boots or shoes in Japan, but it all depends of course on how fashionable you want to be. I recommend checking out stores that cater to construction workers, and home depot kind of stores like HOME’S. You can get so called jikatabi (work tabi). You probably won’t be considered cool wearing them in Japan, though.

Having said that, I bought some pretty cool bright blue soft construction boots for just 2,500 yen in such a store, that everybody thinks are cool. When I tell them they are work boots, their chins fall to their chest.

Just did an image search on Google for Tabi Boots. Found some cool stuff.

@Kjeld, yea, I’m wanting some that COULD be cool when mixed the right way with certain styles, but not having to pay the Margiela price. I’ve seen some on ebay but they are around 60.00…I think I could find some cooler for cheaper in Japan. Thanks for the links, I’ll check that out for sure.
