Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Wow! I am speechless!
Congrats, Kjeld Duits! You found a beautiful Goth Loli! :D
Her outfit looks partly self-made, especially the hat.

Ah, the gothic lolita, a classic favorite. No way to disappoint with this!

I just adore the intricate details on the hat. Great shot! :]

Thanks, Wara! Appreciate it. Actually, Yukari had just a few minutes available and I wanted to shoot her friend, too. So the shoot was a bit rushed…

I like her outfit, but the cardigan thingy she’s wearing somehow makes her upper part of the body look tiny. (o_O) Or is it just the photo…?

@Berry: I’m pretty sure nothing is self-made what she’s wearing. Just take a look at one of the h.NAOTO collections on this website and you will see why I’m saying that. :) They might look like self-made but actually are pretty expensive! >_<

@gionbaby: In this case it is not the photo, but the clothes that make her upper body look smaller. It is probably also intended that way. I think it is almost all h.Naoto stuff, if not all, that’s Yukari’s wearing. After all, she was on her way to an h.Naoto fashion show!

@Kjeld Duits: I know what you mean by it being intended that way, but I still don’t like that certain aspect of her outfit. Yeah, it all seemed h.NAOTO to me too. Oh, I would like to attend an h.NAOTO fashion show once! Maybe next year. (^^)

@gionbaby: Are you planning to visit Japan next year?

@Kjeld Duits: Hopefully it’s going to be more than just a visit, but yes. ;) Btw, I have already been to Japan in 2008 (spent 8 months there as an exchange student). This time it’s going to be a little different though, but I can’t tell any details yet. ;)

How long have you been living in Japan?

@gionbaby: Cool. I gather you enjoyed your previous stay as you’re planning to return. It sounds like you have some very serious plans.

I have been in Japan since 1982, actually. I have spent the largest part of my life here. But I still don’t look Japanese.

@Kjeld Duits: Yes, I enjoyed it so much! The people, the language, the food, the scenery, the mix of modern and traditional, everything. Of course I went through some semi-serious culture shock in the beginning, even though I thought I was prepared for Japan (how naive, right?) and there were a bunch of things I didn’t like at first, but I was crying like a baby when I had to leave and I’m yearning for Japan ever since that day.

You are right, I have some pretty serious plans. How about a drink together if I make it there? :D Only if you want to of course… ^^;;

Since 1982? Wow! Awesome. How did you get there? Yeah, we will never look Japanese for sure and it can make things harder, but to tell the truth, I’m completely fine with that. I think those people who are not Japanese but try to behave TOO much like the Japanese (or even try to look like them) are somewhat ridiculous. You have to play by the rules if you are living there and respect their lifestyle, but you don’t need to (completely) give up on who you are. Never. Well, this is just my opinion of course.

Haha, sorry I like totally drifted away from the main topic here. >_<

@gionbaby: I had some drastic culture shock myself. It lasted for at least three years… But now it’d be extremely difficult for me to move to another country. I mentioned that I don’t look Japanese, just a joke, but it’s fun that you brought up magibon. I was really surprised when I first saw her. I don’t see much wrong with using make-up in the Japanese way, though. Surgical changes however would make me feel more than squeamish.

I am up for a drink—keep me posted. ^ _ ^

@Kjeld Duits: I know it was only a joke, but it reminded me of Magibon and I couldn’t help mentioning her. (>.<;) I just read your short bio on your website. You are truly fantastic. What an awesome career! =O Congratulations.

Yeah, I shall do that. I really enjoy following this website, posting comments and reading other people’s comments and responses. And I’m already excited about the possibility of meeting you. \(^ __ ^)/

@gionbaby: Thanks. Usually you’d say, it keeps me off the streets, but in my case, it actually keeps me on the streets!

It is wonderful to hear that you enjoy following JAPANESE STREETS. Since we changed the design of JS in February, I think it has become much easier to create a conversation about Japanese fashion and to actually interact with everybody. I really enjoy it myself!
