Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Dig the style. One thing I noticed in Tokyo was that not a lot of people have tattoos. Some do, but it’s not like here in Canada where everybody and their grandma has one.

@Richelle: I can’t compare with Canada, but there are a lot more tattoos in Japan then 20 or even 10 years ago. Tattoos have traditionally been associated with yakuza and sporting one creates all kinds of troubles, from not being allowed in public baths and swimming pools till not being able to get a job. So the people who have tattoos, usually get them on easy to hide places, and cover then up.

@kjeld: i looked on his phone, so i commented about myspace haha..
about tattoo, my almost-the-entire-body tattoed friend visited japan and was welcomed.. i think isnt such a problem nowadays.. look at j-rockers ne

It seems like tats are becoming more commonplace everywhere. I think the difference is though that now they are used more as self expression than ever and less to simply look tough.
@ojisanbaka tattoos are definitely associated with rock, I guess Japan is moving away from associating them with yakuza and moving towards associating them with pop culture ; ]
On a side note I love the bag; Keith Haring was such an iconic pop artist.

@ojisanbaka: I hadn’t noticed myspace yet on his iPhone. I did notice the other apps, and realized how much apps tell about you.

@Arc: Yes, tats are definitely a fashion statement for most people now. At least that is the case in Japan. Great that you drew attention to the bag. Keith Haring creations rock!

Leo must be well known in the area, other fashion bloggers like Rei Shito have found and shot him as well!

@Sierra: Same day, same place. There were more photographers shooting visitors to the fashions shows. It does show the high quality and wide variety of the photographs at JS, though!

@infashuated: You’re right, I should have asked him to take it off for additional shots. Too much to do, too little time!

I think that at least one other photographer shot him as well. He’s clearly very cool, so photographers automatically gravitate towards him.

Extravagant. <3 I love his chest piece. It seems like some sort of a belt. Awesome really!

@Kjeld Duits: His cellphone apps really tell a lot about him. Actually I think he did show those on purpose.
