Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Comment (日本語もOK)

The traditional clothing – the colors, texture of the fabrics and how they drape – really suit her. Plus she has the cutest grin in the first photo. My compliments to both the model and photographer.

@Ms. Jody: Yes, Nile can have a really lovely, almost naughty, grin sometimes. Glad that I was able to capture it. This time, Nile was inspired by the look of Oiran, the high class courtesans of old Japan.

“Almost naughty” describes her grin well. I was originally going to use a word with similar meaning, but I’m concerned it may be a regionalism and could be misunderstood, so I decided against including the term altogether. Anyway, I was trying to say something along the lines of “playfully mischievous.”
