Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Oh my goodness the Gloomy Bear inspired line was adorable! Anyway… ~;;

Though the designs from Vantan and Bunka are both very skilled, I have to say I think I enjoyed the pieces from Bunka a lot more. There was more variety between the different lines, and yet each line had more continuity. The Vantan pieces were just very discombobulating to me (but maybe that’s because each one was by a different designer?… I couldn’t tell). I love over the top and playful lines, but I like the fact that Bunka has some students who do more minimalist and simple stuff- it’s refreshing to see both the avant garde and the more mainstream together.

Some of these look like outfits you’d see in a video game. I’m blown away!

@MissMolly: I was really surprised by the Gloomy Bear outfits. I met Gloomy creator Mori Chack long before he was famous. He was selling his illustrations as postcards on Shinsaibashi avenue in Osaka at the time and I immediately fell in love with his work. In 2002 I introduced Mori Chack and Gllomy on JAPANESE STREETS and in magazines and newspapers worldwide. Now he is world famous of course. To prevent misunderstandings, the outfits above were not made by him, but by a Bunka student.

Ah, I love this so much. The Bunka students are so talented! I especially love the leather/biker feel of the first ones, they’re really cool. But my two favourites must be the bridal looks, the ones who look a bit Mori inspired, and the Gloomy bear outfits. They’re so creative and despite the fact that it’s inspired by a cartoon it still manages to have a great silhouette! Thank you so much for sharing these amazing photographs.

@Jenni: Thank you for your nice comments. The bridal looks kind of make you want to get married, right? ^_-

Diego Uene reminded me of Dorothy Vacance. ^^
Just making assumptions here. His designs look quite peruvian or latin american, his name is a quite common name in South America, is that his real name? Does he have a multiple nationality?

@Maria: I haven’t yet met him, but it sounds like he either has a Japanese father and Spanish speaking mother, or one of his forefathers emigrated to Peru, or another Spanish speaking country with many Japanese immigrants.

@KD: From what I’ve heard, in Peru there is a quite large population of Japanese people and other Asian nationalities too… ^^

@María: Yes, indeed. Peru even had a president of Japanese heritage, Fujimori.
