Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Is it legal for teens in Japan to smoke? Also, is it legal for them to go to bars and drink?

@AJ Reese: Japanese law prohibits the smoking of cigarettes and consumption of alcohol by people under the age of twenty. So in the above images you see someone breaking the law. ^_-

I always love her looks! For some reason she kind of reminds me of Rhianna…something about her attitude :)

@Ellen: Do you mean this Rhianna, or perhaps Rihanna?

Japan has liquor and beer for sale in vending machines – so, yeah, it’s legal… LOL!!! As for nightclubs, I was let into them in both Kobe and Osaka, when I was 13 years old, while I grew up in Japan, and attended Canadian Academy in Kobe… I was tall for my age, though.

@Carey: These days most, if not all, vending machines for alcohol and cigarettes are fitted with ID readers. This can be a driver’s license or a special card with a magnetic strip which you can receive upon confirmation of age. Things have changed. ^_- But, it’s still easy to get into clubs for people underage; there is no law against that. ^^

@Kjeld Duits: Yes, things most certainly have changed, then! I use to buy Suntori and JW Whiskey, in small bottles, albeit, from vending machines. I was never a fan of their, or American Beer, at that time, though it was also available in the machines, too. I am certain that Gaijin, like I am, will find a way to make fake ids to buy what they want, if they are not of age.

@Carey: Making them is pretty tough because it includes a magnetic strip. But “borrowing” one from somebody who is of age is very easy… ^_-

@Kjeld Duits: Smile!!! I was thinking that a magnetic strip writer, like identity thieves use, would work. You just have to rip the info from someone’s ID you can get access to, like a parent, or older sibling. It’s definitely doable…

I will be returning home (since I lived there from age 2) to Japan in the Spring of 2014. Just 15 months away! Yay!!!

@Carey: Back to Kobe? By the way, when did you study at CA?

When it was still up on the side of the mountain – from ’69 through ’80. My parents returned to the States when I was going into 10th grade.

I will live in Tokyo, this time…

@Carey: Oh, that’s a while ago. We probably know some of the same people, although I can’t think of names right now. I arrived in ’82, just two years after you left. Tokyo’s where the all action is. Good choice. ^_-

@Kjeld Duits Did you know the Graham girls?

Carey
Dec 6, 2012 (4121 days ago)

@Carey: The name doesn’t ring a bell, but I’ve forgotten a lot of names and might know them by sight.
