Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Comment (日本語もOK)

I can see strong Juria influences in this outfit. I don’t really like it, I mean, there is nothing wrong when people are inspired by each other’s style but this girl is even posing for photos like Juria..

Um, this chick is copying Juria Nakagawa. The WHOLE ENTIRE outfit are the exact things Juria has been seen wearing the past few months. Its even the same hair color AND pose. That is JURIA’s pose, NOT your’s. .

I like it, and I don’t think she’s copying Juria.

I love the mismatch contacts and eye makeup. It looks almost natural with this look, if that makes any sense.

Claire

yeah, definitely a copy of Juria!! Way too obvious!

@Lilac, AJ & Nori: Thank you very much for comments. I am a great fan of Juria and absolutely love her and her style. But... Juria is not the only one using these poses. They are fairly common poses in Japan. In terms of her style, visit the NADIA FLORES EN EL CORAZON store in Harajuku (blog), and you will find more girls in this style of clothing. Juria has become representative of the style and because of her charisma receives a lot of attention, but to say that other people wearing the style are copying her is not fair to Narumi and other lovers of this style. As it happens, Narumi is build very similarly to Juria. They are about the same height and weight. So, they do have something in common.

She looks like a doll! I love this outfit, especially the tights.

I’m loving all the graphic tights that people are starting to wear!

The shots from the stairs are my favorite ones ^^
I think it is because of her shoes but…she kind of remind me of Julia ._.

Maria
Oct 3, 2012 (687 days ago)

@Maria: Yes, I agree. Glad that you mention it so nicely. Juria and Narumi have a lot in common, similar styles, similar height and weight and similar body language. When I don’t wear my glasses and I see Narumi on the street I could easily mistake her for Juria. For people who have never seen images of Narumi yet, but many of Juria I can understand that they feel Narumi is copying Juria (see the comments above yours). But that is not the case, and also not fair to Narumi of course.

@SHOGOxo & MissMolly: Yes, the tights are getting better all the time! I like it a lot. ^^

Well, it’s true that Juria and Narumi have a similar style, but I think they express it in a different way. Narumi seems to ba a bit “darker” (if you can say it that way), while Juria seems a bit “softer”.
I don’t know exactly how to express it, but to me they feel different and both unique.

@Nyurah: I understand what you mean. In a few days I have a new shoot with Narumi. This time she wears white; I think it differentiates her from Juria even more clearly.

She looks like just all the Stuff she got is from Juria’s Closet
The Shoes, the Tights, the Top, the Camera, the Hat, the Hair… Thats not inspired thats just a copy of Juria.
Sure Juria is not the only one who wears such clothes, but she always had her own way to put some little extras like the Tights or the Hat and her Hair also to make the Style her own way, not like her copy everything.
Sorry for my bad english

I can`t say anything about her, but I don`t think she is copying. I mean, this is Tokyo Streetstyle. Tokyo is such a big city, I think its normal that the possibility of meeting two girls who like a similar style is very high in a huge city like Tokyo.

if you go to japan, you will actually find there is strong conformity in styles. Yes, there are different varieties of styles -but most people conform particularly to one style and the attributes to it!

@Kjeld: Thank you for understanding. And I’m looking forward to those shots! :)
@Kiki: I don’t think at all that Narumi is copying Juria’s style, like I wrote before, to me they feel quite different when looking at them. But you know, if you like to look at it in the “copying way” it could also be the other way round. Perhaps Narumi started wearing this style before Juria did. I’m not implying anything with that, like I said, i think that both of them have a great and unique style and I think it’s great that we are able to see it here on JAPANESE STREETS. So thanks to Juria and Narumi for wearing this wonderful style and thanks to Kjeld for shooting it.
And your english is just fine :)

Nyurah

It’s exactly what Juria has worn before and with Narumi wearing it, it’s not so unique.

Oct 5, 2012 (685 days ago)

@KD: Wow, I hadn’t read all the comments and the debate about them! I guess it’s kinda good they are both becoming recognized ^^U But I hope Narumi doesn’t get a bad feeling if she reads the statements about her being a copy :/

Maria
Oct 7, 2012 (683 days ago)

@Maria: That’s what I have been very worried about. Especially because I know that Narumi’s not copying Juria.

To all of this reading this, please realize that each person I photograph reads the comments below her or his photos. So please see your comment as a direct conversation with that person, even if they don’t comment themselves. On JAPANESE STREETS you are not talking “about” that person, you are talking “to” that person. I kindly request that you please consider that in what you say, and how you say it. Common courtesy.

Yeah Lilac is right! Juria is exactly who I was thinking of when I saw her tights!!

Actually here is a lot of girls dressed in this style in Japan right now, and I don’t think they’re all copying Julia, it’s just a big trend regardless of where it originates from. You can compare it with any japanese style like Mori or Dolly where you se big groups of girls wearing very similar outfits. It’s just because Julia got known for having this style that people think she invented it. Regardless, Narumi looks super cute!

Narumi, you’re gorgeous! And your hair is nothing short of perfect. Not only is the coloring gradient done expertly to frame your face and accent your style so well, but you did an amazing job styling it. I love all of your details and your unique and beautiful style.

Sorry to double post, but I was talking to my boyfriend and said this:
Hmmm. I have a tiny crush on Narumi. She reminds me of Emily Osment in that R. L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It. It has the most adorable goth heroine. Narumi has a really cute face and a great eye for detail. I want to be friends with her and do makeovers on each other.

With all of the negativity, I thought Narumi wouldn’t mind hearing that.

@MaliceInWonderland: That is sweet of you.

Oct 9, 2012 (682 days ago)

@Katja: Exactly, Katja. Thank you for pointing that out. To the people who have become curious by Katja’s message, check out the site of the NADIA FLORES EN EL CORAZON store in Harajuku (blog). Many of the people into this style shop here.

I think people should keep in mind that Juria is just one person and she’s seen many times online because she’s just out there. There are probably many other girls in Tokyo, and even in other cities that have styles similar to Juria, but not because they want to copy her, but they just probably happen to like to dress similarly and shop at the same places. It’s not like Juria just makes her own clothes for her exclusively to wear, the items she wears are bought in stores and other girls have the right to buy those things xD

As a girl who wears Lolita, I know there are many Lolitas that have a lot of the same items, but not because we try to copy one another, but we just happen to like the same exact print. I think in a lot of other substyles you can see the same thing happening. So I think it’s very unfair to say that this girl wants to be like JURIA. You know? Along the lines of what Kjeld said, be considerate of the words you say.

phew long comment, sorry xD

@Kiara: Very well and very clearly said, Kiara. I completely agree with you. Especially because I know both Juria and Narumi personally. Thank you for expressing your thoughts on this!
