Important: this is not the Nazi symbol, which was right-facing.
The left-facing swastika is used as symbol for Buddhism in Japan.
On Japanese maps it donates the location of a Buddhist temple.
In Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism, it is a sacred symbol of auspiciousness.

Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

At first I thought how cute she looks. Then I noticed her piercings, splitted tongue and Swastika and my jaw dropped :D Wow! This girl sure knows how to make a strong impression! I love her look

VERY interesting, I want to know more about this girl. I love her use of color, the orangish hair with the blue jacket, and I really love the floral headband as well. I think she is definitely taking some trends but keeping it her own, which is really cool. The Reeboks really add the perfect extra kick for me. Super cool.

I have seen her before on a different website and in Kera magazine, too. She still had black hair then and a somewhat darker look. I don’t like this look so much on her (those sneakers are horrifying), but I love her haircut and some elements of her outfit (for example the nail cross on her bag, which is probably hand-made). I have been thinking about getting the same lip piercing for some time now. Will see… ;)

@fatcatinthehat: That was very much my reaction when I stopped Marina on the street. I only noticed the piercings and the split tongue after we started talking. Made me love her look even more!

@Lactose Intoler-Art: I am sure I will shoot Marina more often. Incidentally, contrary her edgy look, she is incredibly sweet, friendly and polite. Her parents totally understand her and her style, she told me.

@gionbaby: While I was talking with Marina, several other people I sometimes shoot, like Kurebayashi and Junya, passed by and they all knew each other. So Marina is definitely part of the scene and I am sure has been photographed before. Actually, I think KERA was waiting in the shadows for me to finish.

By kachusha you mean that floral headband? Does she have a page of her brand?
The brooch from Bas Kosters is that little green red-eyed head? I love it! <33
As Lactose Intoler-Art said I want to know more about this girl. ^^

@Maria: Yes, kachusha is not really correct. It is really a floral headband. Marina is just starting her brand, so there is no site yet. The green red-eyed head is indeed the Bas Kosters’ head. The previous day Kosters did a live painting event at Laforet and Marina had a chance to talk with him. He gave her the brooch!

@KD: I had never read that word before, so I asked ^^U
I like that kind of objects, she is so lucky >_<
Those tights seem to be the same that the ones on 2NE1’s japanese music video SCREAM <3

Wow, this is so cute and interesting! I love all her piercings and body modifications, especially her tongue! I have a friend who did this himself, brave guy! Are piercings and body modifications like this common in Japan? I don’t see much of it around.

@Maria: I see. Not good to see a word for the first time when it’s not really used correctly. ^_-

@Laura: Marina also cut her tongue herself. That is tempting fate. Get it done professionally! Piercings and body modifications are not common, but there are still more than enough people who have them, for me to find and photograph.

@KD: The earring on her left-ear (the huge black one) is kinda common here, not common in everyone, but common in those who are into tattoos and piercings. I admire those who are brave enough to let their skin stretch like that.

@Maria: I admire the courage of anybody doing any kind of body piercing. But I always wonder about how they feel about it 30 or 40 years from now. I mean that tongue never grows back together…

@KD: Well, I guess that if they have a true or deep meaning they will always appreciate them… I think they will become the coolest grandmas and grandpas ever ;)

Most of her style is not something I’d be drawn to normally, but she totally rocks it! She’s a gorgeous girl with a cool look to her.

@Mirry: During the past few days I did two more shoots with Marina. She has gone even more extreme. But still rocks it. Coolness must run through her blood.
