Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

I find the second and third collections very well put together and both of them have a very clear ‘theme’ going on. Especially the second collection has some truly beautiful pieces.
The collection by Tatsuya Tamada is bothering me slightly, it is very beautiful but the instant I saw it I thought: Iris van Herpen! But that could just be me of course.

@DCii: Thank you. Your thinking of Iris van Herpen when you see Tatsuya Tamada’s work kind of makes sense to me. They have very different creations, but the underlying concept appears similar. The second collection (Lisa Yamai) is my favorite as well on this page. That’s also the reason I used one of Yamai’s creations as the top photo. Truly beautiful work, and I can see people wear it. I hope we see a lot of her over the coming decades.

Thank you for posting these photos! I love seeing Bunka students work. I really the Junnosuke Kato collection. It seems a bit like space age military. I would love to see the whole design process somehow..The silhouette looks like it came straight from their original sketches. I love the hoods, the shoulders, and the wires sticking out. Really cool collections!

Tatsuya Yamada is soooo pro! Tan Yu Szu’s designs and colors reminded me of Agatha Ruiz de la Prada <3
Thanks for sharing these awesome collections, Bunka is always so cool!

Junnosuke Kato’s collection blew my mind! It kinda reminds me of old school sci-fi movies like ‘Blade Runner’. That’s how I imagine clothes will look like in hundred(s) years.

@Lactose Intoler-Art & Maria: Thank you for posting these photos! / Thanks for sharing these awesome collections — Thank you for commenting on them!

@Lactose Intoler-Art & fatcatinthehat: I think there is a small group of people potentially into Junnosuke Kato’s designs. But they are the kind of people who become truly loyal fans. Would love to see his work on the street!

@Maria: I really like Tan Yu Szu’s work, too. I like its uplifting cheerfulness. It is more Paris than Tokyo, don’t you think? Her work reminds me of Agatha Ruiz de la Prada as well. I wonder if Prada is one of her inspirations.

@KD: I think it has a little bit of Paris, but it has more Tokyo than Paris. The hats remind me of House of Flora too.

Junnosuke Kato’s designs are something that would be seen more often in korean fashion rather than in Tokyo.
Just what I think ^^

I like how Tan Yu Szu makes the plastic top with flowers-embellished, it’s fun and quirky.. may I know where I could view Tan’s complete collection? thanks.^^

@Fumiko: This is the full collection Tan Yu Szu displayed at this show. She is still a student, so doesn’t have her own company yet. Also in the press info that I received there was no contact info for her, nor a site. I googled her romanized and kanji (譚芸斯) names and found only one more site that shows her work. We publish rare stuff here! ^_-

Ugh, I just love seeing these every time, though I felt like the last show from Bunka that you posted, each line seemed a bit more cohesive. Not that these were badly made by any stretch of the imagination, but some of the lines were so incredibly detailed that they almost looked “messy”. Or perhaps a better word is discombobulating. Anyhow, everyone’s a critic haha

I always love seeing the designs of the up and coming in the industry!

@MissMolly: I love seeing the new talent, too. Will try to pay more attention to graduating students. It is easier now the JS office is located in Tokyo.
