Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

It seems a lot of people you snap have very short-trimmed eyebrows. I’ve actually taken to doing this too a while back (and I found it was an improvement). I was just wondering when it became popular to do so.

@Arc: Oh my, you got me. It has been around for a while, but I wouldn’t dare to pinpoint when it started.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out by researching our online archive, which goes back to 2002 (look here for photos since Jan 2010 — newest images first).

I don’t have the time myself at the moment as I am on a needs assessments trip for offering aid to tsunami victims, but perhaps you’d like to do some digging yourself. Do share the results with us here!

I know that shaved down eyebrows are extremely popular among visual-kei musicians. I don’t know if the look originated with that look, but I don’t think I’ve seen one with natural brows. Maybe it’s just a popular look in alternative fashion in general? I think VK started in the 90s? Not sure too sure, though…

Back in 2005 we published this blog entry about shaved eyebrows in Japan.

Thanks Kjeld! I will definitely poke around when I have some time. Amber too— I’ve seen that also. I felt dumb when I noticed because for years I just thought they had magic eyebrows.

Aha. I like the idea of magic eyebrows.
