Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

Cool! Excited to see an Osaka shot again, and a night shot too. I have seen some shoes with the flat fronts like that by HIRO. I really like them. Do you know the brand? I would love some similar shoes. Haha

Will check, Brandon! Interestingly I used to wear traditional leather shoes handmade by Sami people, native inhabitants of Finland. Ippei’s shoes reminded me of those shoes I wore so many years ago.

That’s amazing Kjeld! I heard there were Sami in Norway too, is that true? (You know I have some Norwegian heritage, so I just found this when researching the culture..)
Did you get them in Denmark? Was it more of a personal style thing, or a cultural thing for you?

Yes, Sami basically live in the north of Scandinavia. Before there were borders, they roamed from Norway all the way to Russia. I actually bought the shoes while visiting Norway. I fell in love with the design and I really liked how they connected me with the earth and a basic lifestyle interconnected with nature. They were far more true and real than shoes designed by someone in an office and made in a factory.
