Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

I keep seeing pictures of people with those long, layered metal rings.

@Etsune: Yes, Vivienne Westwood is extremely popular here.

Between her expressions and her outfit she just oozes cool…

Mitake managed to pull this look off really well! The colour combination deserves some kudos for sure, however I can’t help but say it: I really dislike the cut/shape of this VW jacket. It’s boring, and somehow shapeless. And what’s up with the random armband safety-pinned to the sleeves? o_O Sorry Vivian, but this isn’t one of your best creations, I’m afraid. The other thing is the skirt. This material somehow doesn’t work for me as a skirt material… but maybe it’s just me. ;)

I remember I wanted to by that VW ring in a used manga/clothes/everything shop called Manga Soko in Akita once, but it was too expensive (around 40000JPY for the used one), so I just gave up on it. :/

Btw, Mitake looks older than 17 to me. It’s kind of weird, because Asian people almost always appear younger than they really are. :D Well, there got to be some exceptions right? (:

gionbaby, the only thing that I thought was just OK was the jacket. But worn with tight jeans. The skirt makes Mitake look ‘wider’ than she is, which no girl wants. Also the mix between mature and childishness doesn’t work. The necklace is ?????? She has good hair, and a pretty face and also she is only seventeen, so she has time to ‘get things right’.

I love this girl because she loves colour and I love colour. I remember her from the kimono sessions and I liked hers the best. I love VW. I think the jacket would’ve looked better if it was open but I love the thick, loud stripes. The skirt makes her look boxy but I appreciate her adding another texture. her face is always very cute

Are wigs a common accessory to wear in Japan?

Oct 19, 2010 (4318 days ago)

@Mel: Yes (mainly in the bigger cities). They are even selling magazines with information on how to style, wash or cut fashion wigs (and so on). You can change your hairstyle so easily and adjust it to your mood or outfit and no one will think it’s weird. I really love it!

I love it. Mitake-chan always has great style…And she kind of takes on an old FRUiTS magazine style (like 90’s FRUiTS) and mixes it with today. She is ahead of the game.

@Mel: Gionbaby’s explanations are right on. Just look at all the wigs we show on JAPANESE STREETS.

@Lactose Intoler-Art: She is great and always manages to show a different look. I ran into her yesterday and my assistant didn’t even recognize her because she looked so differently from this shot, which we shot just a few days ago!

@akiko: Really? XD Well, it would definitely look better with tight jeans. I agree with you on the skirt and I’m not sure about the necklace either. :‘D Did you see her other look ? Although the two cannot really be compared, I prefer that one more.^^;

Oct 21, 2010 (4316 days ago)

@akiko: Perhaps if Mitake had used the material for the skirt as it is originally intended, with the direction of the fake fur pointing downwards instead of sideways, it would have given a much less boxy impression. I kind of like the idea of misusing the material, though, I must admit…

@gionbaby: I agree. Mitake’s kimono look was awesome!

@Kjeld: I never ever heard of her until this website. And just the other day, I read this book (I LOVE READING!) and it in, one of the girls mentioned Vivienne Westwood and i was so happy!

Lol, no, the pleasure is all mine. I can’t remember who it was, but someone on this site told me to look up pictures of her stuff. I did, and I was hooked!

Our Lady of Grace wristwatch!!! Oh my gosh!!!
Even if she isn’t Catholic/Christian/anything, I’m sure Our Lady is giving her a lot of graces. … Especially for bright colorful clothing. <3
