Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

He’s changed! I suited black hair I must say. Those shoes are a lethal weapon.

@Mel: Yes, Hosaka changed quite a bit, didn’t he? I love how the people in Harajuku always manage to surprise you.

@Kjeld: I know right? Also it should have been “he suited” not “I suited”. xD

Beautiful hands…

@Mel: Or “black hair suits him.”

@vivi: I hadn’t paid attention to that at all, but you are right, beautiful hands!

@Vivi: OMG! I COMPLETELY agree! I was just about to mention that. They are gorgeous! Long and slender, sort of like what I’d expect a pianists hands to look like.
@Kjeld: Was he tall?

Etsune
Oct 18, 2010 (2498 days ago)

@Etsune: Yes, he is. My guess is around 180 cm. Glad you like Hosaka’s hands, too.

@Kjeld:
!!!!!!
OMG!!!!!!
His hands and knowing that he’s tall make him SOOOOO attractive to me!
I love tall guys!!!!
Even though I’m short hahahaha.
I’m pretty much the height of an average Japanese girl (130 cm). Wow. I’m realizing how truly short that is….

Is 130 cm about the average height of a Japanese girl?

Etsune
Oct 22, 2010 (2494 days ago)

@Etsune: The average is around 158 cm.

@Kjeld:
Wow.
FYI, I’m an idiot. i converted it wrong lol.
I’m 5’1 (61 inches), which is about 158 cm.
But I converted from 51 inches, and I ended up getting 130 cm.
I feel so stupid.
Anyways, yeah….

@Etsune: Yes, at JS we already thought that you made a calculation error somehow. No problem at all. As it happens, you are exactly the Japanese average! You will be able to shop everywhere in Japan.

@Kjeld: LOL!
I think that’s hilarious that you knew already!
Although to be honest, I know a girl at my school (I don’t know her personally, I just know her because she’s in my grade and I see her around) and she’s so tiny that it’s quite possible that she may be 130 centimeters. She’s Japanese too, which I find quite ironic in this situation.
Lol and what do you mean, “at Japanese streets WE already thought”. Lol were there other people contemplating along with you?

Etsune

@Etsune: Yes, 130 cm for a fully grown girl seemed just a bit too short, although there always exceptions of course. That’s why we figured you may not be familiar with centimeters. We is some of the other team members and myself. I covered the Japan Fashion Week with an Australian and French woman, and two Japanese staff members.

@Etsune: Yes, we did. I actually took all the photos of the shows myself.

@Kjeld:
Writing, yes.
Photography?
Well, I think it’d be cool to photograph, but I don’t know the first thing about about photography.
and OH EM GEEEE
I just noticed the spikes on his shoes!!
I didn’t notice them before…

Etsune
Oct 28, 2010 (2488 days ago)

@Etsune: All photographers knew nothing about photography at one time. ^ _ –

Yes, the spikes are a bit in the shadow. When I shot Hosaka’s shoes I was actually wondering if I should make the spikes more obvious.

@Etsune & KD: Definitely, no one is born knowing something, maybe you born with the talent but If you never try it you’ll never know.
btw, are those shows like private or something like that?

Maria
Oct 28, 2010 (2488 days ago)

@Maria: The shows are by invitation only. Usually the press, photographers, buyers, and special clients and friends are invited.

@Kjeld: [about the photography thing]
That’s true….
Maybe I should learn….
So are you a fulltime photographer, or do you just photograph as a side thing?

Etsune
Oct 30, 2010 (2486 days ago)

@Etsune: I am both a photographer and journalist, actually. I am officially a news photographer and journalist, but fashion is becoming an increasingly larger part of my workload. My other specialty is photographing and writing about natural disasters; I have covered all the largest earthquakes in Asia since 1995, including the 2004 tsunami. I love how your work there really helps people (I donate my photos to organizations like the Red Cross).

See some non-fashion work here:

Pakistan flood victims pleased with US aid
Pakistani children on the motorway

The above two articles were written in Dutch; the English translation is really bad—I should have written it in English myself.

Don’t forget to click on the slideshow below each article!

And a slideshow of some of my work at lightstalkers. All of it quite old, but it gives a good overview.
