Kjeld Duits About the Photographer

Inspired by the stunningly creative street fashion that exploded on the streets of Tokyo and Osaka in the late 1990’s, photo-journalist Kjeld Duits launched JAPANESE STREETS in 2002. This makes JS one of the first fashion blogs on the net, and the very first to cover Japanese street fashion.

I love this! The yellow tights are fabulous! The dress and the tights look great on her. The accessories really compliment the look too.

uhh, i like this!

It is a very straightforward style that Chihiro managed to put together, don’t you think? The mustard color of Chihiro’s tights look great with her black and white of the dress.

Very, very cute! The tights and dress sync so well. And, yes another person accessorizing with a snack item! I’m curious about the underpinnings though, is the ruffley bit at the hem line part of the dress itself or a little slip or bloomer-type shorts?

@2046: After your positive response to the drink last time, I asked Chihiro to not put away her soy drink.
^ _ ^

I actually used to shoot people with accessories like drinks, phones, bicycles all the time, and like it. Have to get back into the mode!

Again, I lack a photo of an important detail! If I remember correctly, the ruffled bit was like a slip or bloomers.

I really like this look! The white polka dots are really cool, and the yellow tights make the dress really pop! I also like the fact that there’s brown in here. I know that a lot of people here in America don’t typically wear black and brown together, and I think it’s so cool that it’s actually done somewhere! She’s overall adorable! Especially with the juice. =)

@Etsune: I have always had the impression that in general, Japanese are much freer with colors than most Westerners. Probably because of their experience with kimono where it is very common to use very different colors in the obi sash and the actual kimono. I really love the Japanese use of color. Did you see our series on traditional Japanese colors?

@Kjeld: You are absolutely right. I think over here there is a tendency to be almost phobic about colours. It’s very sad.

Oct 4, 2010 (4333 days ago)

@Kjeld: I agree. Because of the colors they dress so much better! Though I never thought of it as being because of kimonos…..
ANd no, i haven’t seen it (yet) but I JUST clicked the link and am getting ready to see it….

@Etsune: The series is just an introduction, but I think you will like it. I hope you will be able to use it as a stepping stone into the beautiful world of Japanese colors. Even the names of the colors are beautiful (although you need Japanese to understand them…).

This cutie totally rocks the house with those dots and yellow tights! Love it!

I love the look! Her tights make me giggle every time I look at them. :Đ I love how the colour of her belt and bag (which is awesome by the way!) matches her hair colour. It really perfects her look.

@gionbaby: I felt so, too. With the three brown items perfectly distributed at about the same distance from each other I felt my eyes actually jump down from her hair to her belt to her bag, before taking in the dress and the tights. Because it makes your eyes dance, Chihiro’s look becomes really fun to look at.

I really love the thighs… I’m desperately looking for similar ones right now. H&M used to have them as an regular item (here in Germany). Not right now. :(

Do tell, because I am petite and your street photos look amazing all the girls look well proportioned to the clothing. . .on average how tall are your models? Sometimes I look like my clothing is swallowing me. I love layers and colors but it can be overwhelming. hehe!

@Nadine: The women we photograph are on average between 150 and 165 cm. Japanese who have been to Western countries always complain about the sizes being so big. If you are small, Japan is shopping heaven!

Well that makes sense. I have the worst time shopping (160cm on a good day), now I want to plan a shopping trip to Japan!!! Thanks for the response.

@Nadine: Make sure to take lots of money, because you will find lots and lots of stuff you’ll love, and all in your size!
